The power of the religious right: A flashback
I just heard a blurb on ABC radio news about a major religious leader saying that God had spoken to him and said Bush will win the election. I couldnt find an article online. BUT, I did find these oldies but goodies...

http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/02/28/campaign.wrap/
"The Texas governor responded to the speech by accusing McCain of "shamelessly using religion to get ahead" and touted himself as the only GOP candidate who is "a uniter, not a divider."

Pat Robertson: God tells me it's Bush in a blowout
By SONJA BARISIC
Associated Press
January 2, 2004, 12:44 PM EST
NORFOLK, Va. -- Pat Robertson said Friday that God told him President Bush will be re-elected in a landslide.
``I think George Bush is going to win in a walk,'' the religious broadcaster said on his ``700 Club'' program on the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network, which he founded.
``I really believe I'm hearing from the Lord it's going to be like a blowout election in 2004. It's shaping up that way,'' Robertson said.
``The Lord has just blessed him,'' Robertson said of Bush. ``I mean, he could make terrible mistakes and comes out of it. It doesn't make any difference what he does, good or bad, God picks him up because he's a man of prayer and God's blessing him.''

2. God as Karl Rove
How.... blasphemous, and sadly we all believe this from Pat Roberton

His line, if he has one, is to the devil himself.

4. Marion's prediction track record.
I hope Pat's record of assessing a candidate's chances of winning the presidency holds up. As I recall, he used to think that he had a pretty good chance of winning the presidency a decade and a half ago or thereabout (for those in need of a recent history reminder, he didn't even get the nomination).

8. "it doesn't make any difference what he does.."
good or bad? You mean he could blow up or starve half the world and still be 'chosen by God'? Maybe he could take a shit in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Or walk around the Rose Garden with his pants around his knees. Or maybe march up and down Pennsylvania Ave. in his underwear and army helmet waving an M-16. Sheeesh, what an idiot.

3. I think the term "religious right" tends to make these
loons sound legitimate. I have stopped reffering to them as the religious right and either call them the American Taliban or simply fundamentalist extremists.

5. Christian Conservative Moral Absolutists of the 21st Century
Its a catch all phrase which ditto monkeys have a hard time fathoming but accept as flattering. Ensure in a discussion with them that they accept the fact that there number one goal is to destroy the constitution (which it is). They can not win an argument based on facts so the path of least resistance is to take away the rights of those they debate. Unbeknownst to them, they strive to sacrifice their own rights, which ironically, we fight for.

7. the "christian" right has taken over the GOP
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 04:31 PM by ithacan
and that's a fact.

For the details, see http://www.theocracywatch.org/

It traces how the religious right has over the past 30 years worked and then succeeded in taking over the GOP. Every one of the GOP congressional leaders is a "christian" right person. The entire Bush agenda is in line with so-called "biblical" positions of the fundies.
