Canadian DUers - Anyone know about Independent MP Jim Pankiw?
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 05:09 PM by Screaming Lord Byron
He's too extreme for the Alliance.
I'm trying to do a statistical analysis of Saskatchewan ridings for the Federal Election, and I'm trying to gauge whether or not Pankiw has a chance of re-election. I hope not, but does anyone have any solid facts or figures?

4. Pankiw & re-election
If nothing else he has name recognition, and knows how to keep himself in the news. (Y'know, no such thing as bad publicity.....)
I believe that he also ran as a candidate for mayor (Saskatoon, if I recall) and got embroiled in a mess about possibly not being an eligible candidate, due to some questions about the location of his true principle residence.

Since the vote last fall, he's barely been heard from, however someone strong needs to run against him, otherwise the name recognition factor could get him re-elected.

5. He ran for Mayor in ToonTown and came 3rd?
Not even an issue here?

so...Why are you even asking in DU?

There are tons of Alliance creeps with an illustrious pedigree that are MEMBERS?

Why ask?

6. I'm analyzing the ridings for the federal election, and I want to know
if it's likely he'll hold his seat. That's about my level of interest in this fool.

8. What are you talking about?
All I'm asking is if anyone out there has specific knowledge of which party is likely to win this seat in the upcoming Federal Election. Pretty simple, really.

I have a bookmark for the 1997 election results and riding-by-riding info, but the only link I can find for the 2000 equivalent is dead.

http://www.newsworld.cbc.ca/election97/

And the selector isn't working ...
http://www.newsworld.cbc.ca/election97/ridings/ridings.html

So ... I randomly enter numbers, find Saskatchewan ridings, and ultimately find the right one:

http://www.newsworld.cbc.ca/election97/ridings/233.html

Anyhow, it's a quick reference for stats before and up to 1997, which you probably already have. ;)

In the 88 federal, it was NDP.

10. Cheers, that backs up what I've found. His seat may go NDP
Former Reform / CA MP's who run as independents have a dismal track record of success, like Jack Ramsay in Crowfoot.

12. I believe Nettie Wiebe will be the NDP candidate
in Saskatoon-Humbolt. I don't have a cite, but I've read she's intending to contend for the nomination.

Wiebe's the former President of the National Farmers Union, and ran for the leadership of the Saskatchewan NDP, to the left of Lorne Calvert.

A very, very strong candidate, and a great chance to take the riding.

13. With a candidate of that calibre, assuming she gets the nod
the NDP would have a very good chance. We won't know for sure until we hear what Pankiw's doing. If he runs again, chances are he'll lose, as I've said, before, CA candidates who run as independents have a tendency to do badly. If he does, he may well take enough votes away from the CPC candidate to let a resurgent NDP take the seat. On condition of this all happening, I'm going to call this seat for the NDP. Thanks, Minstrel Boy, thanks to everyone else.

14. A site you'll want to visit as the election nears:
http://www.electionprediction.com/

The 2004 board hasn't opened yet. Info from the Canadian federal election of 2000 is still archived, as well as some others. Riding by riding speculation, some quite informed.
