Here's some Geisel cartoons for your consideration!!
Due to a recent Lounge thread, I thought it might be interesting to reflect upon some nearly 60 year old Geisel (Dr. Seuss for those un-literary DU'ers out there.) Sad how things haven't changed in years. I wish this guy were still alive today, he'd have a major weekly article on DU I'm sure, to help fight the neo-cons and their take over of America!!!

If you've only experienced Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) though his famous illustrated books, I suggest that you look at his politcal cartoons. The guy was a genious and saw through a lot of shit that was thrown at the American public during WWII, before and after. He was a big supporter of ousting Hitler and was against the policy of Isolationism that led to the horror of WWII.

Though, he did support some sick measures in WWII, he was a passive supporter of internment, and was occasionaly jingoistic in his approach, but I still believe that Giesel would be on our side today...in our fight to get our country back...

Replace "Americans" with "Democrats" and the two war criminals with two others, Rove and Cheney and realize the meaning hasn't changed in this next block...

1. These are great!
And of course, Geisel's style is instantly recognizable for other reasons... ahem. :)

Just to show a few, if you want, though there any many books about the man and his views. Many have written doctoral thesis' over his works and his political views. A complex man who has yet to be realized in impact on Americans and their political views (considering the new "Gen-Y" and late "Gen-X'ers")

3. A very interesting find....
I had no idea Dr. Seuss did political cartoons. They are, still, very much in character for him. Easy to see where the Grinch came from, from these....

Cheers.

But Teddy Geisel was pretty racist...

6. That's why I added a disclamer against him at the end of my post
He did have racist tendancies, true...but then again he was portraying war criminals who deserved nothing less than the humilation they got. He could have done better to isolate these individuals from the rest of their country, but...you have to remember the times and the often jingoistic approach that occurred. I will not excuse some of his cartoons, that's why I do applaud your critical stance, it is important. Though, think of the days right after Sept. 11, and the anti-Arab sentiment in nearly every press....

8. Always loved Dr. Seuss
On national reading day this year, our kid was the only kid to go to school dressed up as a Bloog.

Some favorite Dr. Seussisms.

"But I've bought a big bat
I'm all ready, you see.
Now my troubles are going
to have troubles with me!"

"A person's a person, no matter how small."

"I know up on top you are seeing great heights,
but down at the bottom, we too, should have rights."

"And the turtles of course,
all the turtles are free.
As turtles, and maybe
all creatures should be."

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It's not."

I even taught a Sunday Schol class called "The parables of Dr. Seuss.
