1. Pinkpops, you have your PM off.
Can you change the headline to be PBS. People might think a women's ailment got coverage.

3. "Imperial United States"
Re: the discussion that followed

Did you catch that retired Marine guy (they had TWO pro war military guys playing tag team, basically saying that this was "showing restraint," i.e., no one got shot or raped in front of the family, ala Saddam, so this was A-OK ... no opposing voice) when he referred to "the Imperial United States"? My jaw hit the floor.

Um ... let's see if I can find the quote.

OK ... transcript of the discussion is here:
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/jan-june04/iraq2_01-02.html

And check this quote ... the emphasis is mine.

COL. GARY ANDERSON: The Sunni Triangle and
particularly around the area of Samarra and the area of the
4th Division is in. That's the division that -

TERENCE SMITH: -- Charlie Company -

COL. GARY ANDERSON: -- is operating there. An
important point to make is that the end state that we, THE
IMPERIAL UNITED STATES
is attempting to achieve in that
country is not to have Americans kicking down doors.
Doors have to be kicked down in guerrilla wars and
suspects have to be hunted down, and so forth. We
eventually want Iraqis to be doing that.

5. yeah
bummer that they had 2 guys basically saying the same thing. I'm not sure if it was in the report but I saw a transcript quoting a soldier saying he didn't care what any detractors might say, they would all cut their own throats if the commander in chief told them to. I suppose that means they mould cut the detractor's throats too, Ve vas just vollowing orders...

7. That one young soldier was quite eloquent
The one talking about coming home on leave and walking with his wife at the mall, and how he automatically looked at everyone's hands for weapons, noted entry and exit points, how he felt naked without any weapons, without his squad. He couldn't help it, and he was afraid it would affect him his whole life.

There are so many more costs of war besides the deaths. There are the 10's of thousands of physically wounded, and then the even greater number who will be emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives, like this thoughtful young man. What a tragedy this is.

10. we are screwed
for those of you too young to remember this looks more and more like Vietnam with every passing hour. Hearts and minds indeed!

sure, fewer loss of lives but an administration telling us that the press is making it seem worse than it is and a whole generation of young men brutalized by war.

How in the world do they think we can get out by next summer? How in the world do they think we can do anything good there anymore? We look like brownshirts over there.
