Are we entitled to expect more from a first lady than this?
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 07:36 PM by Marianne
HOnestly, she is embarrassing. Aren't we, who pay for her jaunts over Europe dressed in the most outrageous upholstry fabics, entitled to something more representative of the women of America than this sloppy, wrinkled, slovenly dressed woman called "the first lady"?

This is upsetting--she really is becoming more and more wrinkled , slovenly and seeming non caring as we go along.

Can someone give her a helping hand?--this is really unacceptable and is quite a slap in the face to the American woman. She just looks like a slut.

I think this is the worst, non caring slap in the face to American women I have seen yet. You may excuse the poor taste in color , fit and design, but come on, this is a wrinkled mess of a slob of a woman on her way to seclusion in the 1600 acre "Prarie Chapel" away from us all--where she can sit by the pool and smoke to her heart's content and wear a bathrobe all day.

Maybe she should consider that she might pray in that "Prarie Chapel" for some sense of pride or self esteem or some sense of responsibility to her own country as she represents in her manner and her dress. She is just sticking it to us in our face with this type of grey, wrinkled insult. "up yours" is what it says to me.

1. Upholstery fabric aside, she seems to wear alot of "Nehru Jackets."
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 07:37 PM by KoKo01
I think Laura, like most "opressed wives," makes a little statement about herself and her marriage, from time to time. And that's what we are seeing in her "public outfits."

I like to think she knows what's going on...but otoh, to have lived in the BFEE and had two daughters, one wonders what that does to one's mind.

Maybe her whole attitude about herself is just worn down.

88. No, she dresses badly.
There's nothing "conservative" about it. She dresses in ugly clothes. She has an ugly hairstyle.

Her appearance is a walking embarassment to the country.

3. Well, ordinarily I would say that we didn't elect her...
but then no one elected him either.

She doesn't inspire much respect or admiration from me, but I think we should focus on Bush and lay off pickles.

Now the old lady BABs is a different story, because she does lash out politically against her husband's and son's opponents. Her nasty mouth is far more offensive to me than her's or any first lady's looks. Thusfar, Pickles seems just to be a meek (and likely) sedated shadow. Inspiring? Hell no. But, immaterial IMO

She does nothing for me, but I haven't expected her to do anything either.

Of course, I bet Hilary took all kids of crap for her hair, clothing, weight, etc.

I'll be first in line to blast BABs also. I can't stand that woman.

11. Laura has raised more money for her husband's campaign than
Dick Cheney. She has been very busy working for his election.

She is involved--she just looks like and has been billed as a vulnerable, defenseless woman who needs someone to come to her rescue and "protect her" and that, after all, is the role and the personna of the Stepford Wife is it not?

That is her role and her "billing" she seems to like it.

Laura has travelled all over the world, several times, on our money-has had great fairy tale "vacations" shopping and eating on our money-and she does have a responsibility to us for that courtesy we have given her, I would say.

Should she not at least try to look as though she WANTS to represent America as a neatly dressed, self aware and self confident woman? For our sake?

4. No.
First of all, I don't think she looks like a slut. Usually when I think "slut," I think "half- or not-clothed," not somebody who walks around looking like she's wearing the slipcover from my grandma's couch.

With that said, I don't think we're entitled to expect much from her. It's not a paid position.

NOT A PAID POSITION??

I'd like to know who the hell is paying for the junkets to Paris, the lavish parties for thousands of pals, the weekend vacations at Camp David, the maids, the social secretaries, the french pastry chef, the security, the airfare, the book fairs, the gardeners, the booze, the social entree and all the accoutrements of the White House.

Well?

24. I hear that "French Pastries" weren't quite to their taste. Fried Mexican
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 08:41 PM by KoKo01
Bread coated in sugar to follow the "Burritos" they are so fond of. I believe I read a story that the WH Chef under Clinton was fired so that the more "homey" Tex/Mex food they were accustomed to could be served.
Whatever one eats after "Texas sized Cheesburgers, Tacos, Burritos and Chili is their taste. To be authentic I believe it's fried bread balls.
(I used to know the name....but can't spell..it's something like "Sopiapias?") Maybe someone can help me on this one. I made them one time and they were a little like our doughnuts.

On Edit: Here's the correct name and a recipe:
Mexican Sopaipillas
This is a delicious puff pastry dessert that is sometimes served drizzled with honey or served as an accompaniment with soups. It is

I N G R E D I E N T S
2 cups all-purpose flour|
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons solid vegetable shortening
3/4 cup warm water
oil for deep frying

Toppings:
Honey, cinnamon, crema or creme fraiche.
1 cup warm water
Makes: 12- 6 inch tortillas

I N S T R U C T I O N S
Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Use your fingers and rub in the shortening until the mixture is the size of fine bread crumbs. Gradually add just enough water until the dough begins to form. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and allow it to rest for one hour.

Work with half of the dough at a time and roll out into a square keeping it as even and thin as possible. If you have not made pastry before this may take some practice. Just have fun with it! Cut the dough into 3" squares. Complete with the 2nd piece of dough.

Heat oil for deep frying to 375 degrees. Add a few pastry squares at a time and use tongs to push the pastry into the oil. Cook until golden brown on both sides, turning once. Remove them from the oil and place on a plate with paper toweling and allow to drain.

To serve, place on a plate and drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon. Serve creme fraiche or heavy cream on the side.

It would be nice if Laura would do something every once in a while, but I don't think we have the right to expect much of a First Lady. She's only there because she married a guy who got elected (or installed as) president.

From what we've witnessed thus far, this seems to be one of the Stepford Wife's better days. She can wear some pretty gawd-awful stuff.

I would love to see the vapid and vacant, rictus smiling, Laura try to run for the Senate. For some reason that image makes me laugh--although I see Katherine Harris is begging someone to let her run for Senator--and that is really funny.

Is it not strange that the Clintons always have to be brought into the debate as a desperation move, even when it comes to discussing the wrinkled Kung Fu costumed imitator, Laura and her unfortunate lack of self esteem and savvy when it comes to how she presents herself to the world? I find that amusing.

The logic goes something like this:

Laura can be as much of a wrinkled up slob and look like as much a slut as she wants, because, well because Hillary was not that great either!!!!

Bwahahaha

There is nothing wrong with Laura's outfit in the photo up top.

Nothing. If you want to damn her on her taste in men, by all means, but this judging on appearance and fashion taste (or occasional lack thereof) is petty horseshit on DU and it disgusts me.

You combine one of the most cobservatively dressed occupations and put them in the most conservative part of the Bible Belt and then criticize her for her dress of all things. Could we possibly get any more elitist?

she is the first lady.

she represents US.

US -- all of us. Not just the U.S. But US!!!!

Did previous first ladies dare venture out looking like shit, squeezed into tiny outfits? No matter what their previous occupations???? Her being a librarian gives her the right to run around the world looking like shit in OUR name??????

This administration is all about style -- not substance -- just style.

And obviously that's ok for some of you.

Style matters when * lands on an aircraft carrier, decked out in a uniform he has no right to wear, with socks stuffed down his crotch. But all of a sudden it doesn't matter when the First Lady dons these ridiculous tight-fitting and ugly outfits, and travels abroad or ventures out to represent herself to the world in OUR name?

Give me a break.

Even first ladies from poorer and third world countries show more style and grace.

display of total sloppiness and total disregard of one's appearance by the First Lady, the one Bush married up into, of the United States of America? You are happy with the looks of this woman who spends thousands of dollars on her pathetic wardrobe and then proceeds to abuse it by sleeping in it and then appearing for a photo op in the wrinkled mess?

For goodness sake, we may just as well have a bag lady as a first lady traipsing all over Europe on our money just because she married the jerk who stole an election. You would be happy with that?

91. Hmmmm ... "Should"
"should" implies that it's important to, in this case, rate the woman's taste in clothing.

I suppose if someone in the White House is paying you to be an image consultant, then certainly you should.

If you honestly believe that someone who is in regular contact with Pickles reads DU with the express purpose of telling her how she could improve her fashion sense, you certainly should.

You are happy with the looks of this woman who spends thousands of dollars on her pathetic ...

I don't care how she dresses. It doesn't affect me. OTOH, seeing the most petty insults possible on DU, where thoughtful conversations once took place, does.

For goodness sake, we may just as well have a bag lady as a first lady traipsing all over Europe on our money just because she married the jerk who stole an election. You would be happy with that?

Until that gig with the State Dept. comes through, what she wears overseas does not affect me. Why should I be embarrassed if the French are snickering when I didn't do anything to put her in that position?

I have seen bag ladies look better, actually.

Photos?

Better yet: why don't you show us some pictures of yourself in your own finery.

all of the insults you hurl at me cannot do away with the fact that Laura is a rich bitch who does not respect herself and has little sel f esteem.

She spends more on her clothing, perhaps a hundred times more than my yearly stipend.

What I spend or how I dress, or how I have ever dressed or even how my dear mother dressed me when I was two years old, my dear Monte Crisco, has nothing to do, logically, with the conversation at hand. That is that Laura, with all her money, looks like a frump, and, furhter does not seem to care!

So now you're a psychiatrist in addition to being a fashion consultant?

She spends more on her clothing, perhaps a hundred times more than my yearly stipend.

So? Sharon Stone puts on a Gap sweater and looks smashing. Money has little to do with it.

What I spend or how I dress, or how I have ever dressed or even how my dear mother dressed me when I was two years old, my dear Monte Crisco, has nothing to do, logically, with the conversation at hand.

Although I couldn't care less about how your momma dressed you, I happen to disagree on the relevence elsewhere. I think if you want to sit there and slam the woman for her taste in clothes, you should put forth your qualifications.

Maybe it's because I'm such a schlump myself, maybe because some of my family has Asperger's Syndrome, and thus no fashion sense whatsoever. In this picture she is shown stepping out of a plane. I'm usually wrinkled after flights.(But I travel coach!).

Anyway, the Bushes' appalling actions, and ugly souls are much more embarrassing.

45. This is out of line. The First Lady looks just fine.
Maybe you are just trying to be humorous, but I think Mrs. Bush looks nice. Men have the luxury of jumping into suits every day. Women, especially First Ladies are judged more often merely for the clothes they wear.

Think about it, and think about how women are so often judged on their exterior appearence versus who they are as a person, and certainly an individual.

I dont think its fair or right to unfairly target the First Lady, especially when, like it or not, she has been tremendously polite and gracious. She is not responsible for her husbands policies, George Bush is.

It don't fit--first of all. It simply don't fit! There is also something called a foundation garment that prevents the pendulous bosom from reaching the waist and makes for a more pleasing line-- And, you would certainly think to comb your hair, I am sure.

102. Marianne - are you saying that appearance is more important than substance
Nothing used to upset me more than when I would hear someone criticize Hillary Clinton for what she wore or how she looked.

But we rarely ever hear a man being spotlighted and criticized for how they dress, (certainly their make-up**) dressing sloppily or looking disheveled. Its a double standard in our society, but more importantly its a criticism that in my opinion has little, if any thing to do with who an individual is as a person.

I understand that appearance is important, but it has become over-valued and inflated.

I believe our society has become pretty shallow and superficial in placing looks over character traits. I love looking good and dressing well, but there are times I can come to resent it because it feels as though I am being judged more for how I look versus who I am overall. Im not saying thats not a reality and yet I think its become over-valued.

I have known some of the most well-dressed people, men and women, and yet many of them didnt attract me at all from an inner level. So, to judge on appearance is in my opinion not a fair call. If someone does something or expresses opinions that are overly judgemental, unfair or harmful, then you may have a good argument or reason to criticize, otherwise to make a judgement of someone on how they dress is not fair treatment of a person when thats the only factor being judged.

98. actually it is not bashing Laura for her looks at all
it is expressing dismay at her apparent lack of concern for her appearance, appearing in public looking like a two month, on the dirt road riding in a donkey cart, refugee, and unconcern with her appearance which she has every means at her disposal to take care of with all the money in the world to spend on it. She is not blind and certainly, if she is totally baffled, she can hire someone to be there to point out how horrible that Mao type of a thing she is wearing, is.

Maybe we can send her an e-mail with this picture in it? Would that make any difference?

There is no, absolutely no reason why she has to appear the way she does. It has nothing to do with her "looks" and everything to do with her lack of concern with her "looks".

118. I think it would be a good idea if she spent some more money
on some corsets--or, as they are known today as foundation garments. That would be uplifting

That problem of gravity seems to be a very big problem with the line of her clothes. It can be corrected easily though, and she would look a whole lot better if she would just realize that what she sees in the mirror is not a woman of twenty, but a woman past middle age with a figure leaning toward matronly parameters and just hire someone who will make clothes for her that are complimentary and do not look like they are clothes meant for a twenty year old woman--too tight, too short and too too forcing it. That would not be hard, given all her money.

134. I agree with some of the others...why not show us your fashion sense?
I think it's unfair to judge unless you've got the goods. Actually, it's unfair to do it even if you DO have them.

105. No taste...
Mrs. Bush needs to lose about twenty pounds or else start shopping for the next size up. The Chimp-in-Chief also looks as if he's put on a few pounds around the middle since he got that suit.

The grey wouldn't be bad if she added in another color to liven up the outfit. As it is, she looks as if she's a leftover from the army of Yugoslavia or something similarly dreary.

Yes, with all their money, one would expect both the ShRubbishes to look a little more stylish. If someone is helping them with their wardrobes, they are getting ripped off.

109. Maybe Shrubass likes it that way
so that he can be sure that she won't steal the attention from him. This way she just blends into the background like a good little subserviant wife should.

117. I, myself, love Marianne's threads about Pickles
They always make me laugh my ass off!! This is a great line -

"appearing in public looking like a two month, on the dirt road riding in a donkey cart, refugee"

That's the greatest!!

And thanks to LeahMira for the new title for the * family - the "ShRubbishes"!

It fits them to a tee! Almost as good as the Mayberry Machiavellians!!

Who cares about judging Pickle Bush? She's just another useless sore who cares nothing about anything except her own private little passive hell.

Maybe if she were more like Sharon and at least tried to make voodoo dolls from her husband's hair - well, then maybe I could have a tiny bit of respect for her.

120. I don't care what she looks like.
She has a horrible sense of fashion, but I it's the Stepford factor that is so disturbing. However, I can't decide if it's authentic or if it's a Barbara Bush-like facade.

127. Marianne...what will you say about Dr. Dean's wife?
As a Dean supporter, I do hope he wins. One thing I love about Dean is that he seems to have married a very together woman. His wife is not into fashion, she doesn't give a damn about what she is expected to do as First Lady, and she plans on keeping her job as a doctor.

I shudder to think of the nasty comments that may be thrown her way.

Will we support her or will we be non-hypocritical and play fashion police with her when Dean becomes the president?

128. I would guess the latter - as it seems to be all to enticing
to some to focus on the inane and the superficial.

Here is a REAL criticism of the first lady. After the fall of Afghanistan - she goes public to "take on the case of the Afghan women". She is hailed by the media as bringing comfort and conscience to the administration.

Then she NEVER mentions it again - not after the newly opened girls' schools began to be fire bombed and quickly shut down. Not after the warlords reasserted themselves throughout the country - so out of fear most women remained in Burquas and not NOW when the Taliban appears to be gaining ground and hold in some regions of the country.

This makes it appear as though she was political window dressing used to make the administration and their policies appear noble - but demonstrating that the cause to which she spoke was not one she really gave a darn about.

Now on that front - because she took a public stand - she earns criticism. As would any first lady.

The crime of frumpy dressing? Oh Please.

131. This Is SUCH An Important Subject!
Edited on Sun Jan-04-04 02:29 AM by REP
I'm so glad that in this time if diminishing civil rights, an unjustified war, disappearing jobs, a failing educational system and healthcare is not available to all (to name just a few things) that someone has the courage to stand up and talk about what really matters: the frumpy way Laura Bush dresses. Yes, judging a woman on her appearance is the sure sign of a keen mind actively analyzing the most important issue and its effect on the lives of anxious, broke Americans.

132. I disagee. Who cares what she looks like?
I think she looks fine. I disagree with her choice of a husband, but I don't think there's a need to bash her about her looks.
How does she look like a slut?

How is this any different from freepers bashing Howard Dean's wife because of her looks?

135. It Doesn't Bother Me At All
True, LB is a boring dresser. But who cares? What bothers me is her Stepford-like DUH-votion to the evil Bush clan and willingness to stick to their wacky scripts like his "love poem."

Worst LB moment ever was after London: "What protestors? I didn't see any, I so lots of American flags..."

Is she for real?

139. Please don't be offended but...
... is this really what's occupying your thoughts?

Here are some alternate suggestions you might wish to consider as important -

Illegal war; job creation; devastation of environment; transfer of wealth.

Your energy is appreciated.
