How will the right wing shills spin Bush's immigration plan?
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 09:31 PM by Cat Atomic
I don't generally listen to conservative shills, but I'm making an exception in this case. I'm genuinely curious to see how men like Limbaugh, Hannity, Ann Coulter, etc. will spin Bush's immigration plans into something that all good republicans should adore.

So far I've heard...

"Lower labor costs means lower prices for goods! You, the American consumer, will benefit from this."

"Under this plan, people who sneak into the country will be more likely to register with government and let us know they're here. This will make us more secure in the long run."

"So far we've been getting only immigrants who were willing to break the law. Now we'll get higher quality, law-abiding immigrants."

It's actually very interesting to listen to. I've never heard such rhetorical straining in my life.

1. A lot of conservatives hate this bill..
It "rewards lawbreakers" and "takes jobs away from Americans who need them."

4. don't forget that 'they' dilute our culture
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 09:48 PM by rudeboy666
This sentiment drives many of the anti-immigrant rethoric.

While many of their arguments are valid when kept within strictly economic and legal bounds, these arguments soon turn sour once they start talking about the 'browning' of our country with all those 'wetbacks' invading us(just peruse freerepublic for some of this sentiment).

Conservatives will rant and rave. Xenophobes like Buchanan will get another five minutes.

However, when it comes time to vote, conservatives will solidly vote Republican.

14. not to mention import a lot of future Democrats
If Bush gains anything from this, it will be temporary (just ask the Pennsylvania steelworkers.)

2. Catch a rerun of Lou Dobbs
Tonights show was amazing. Dobbs is a prick, but he was ON FIRE tonight...he HATES this idea, and was ripping apart anyone who suggested otherwise. It was an hour-long Bush Slam-fest. I thought I was watching...uh...well, there IS no left-wing show, but if there was, this would have been a great episode. I was literally speachless...I couldn't believe I was listening to Dobbs. Then he even posted lots of Anti-Bush hate mail.

I really feel the tide is turning. You simply don't hear anything positive about Chimpy much these days...except when they report how much everyone loves him, which I am convinced more than ever are completely fraudulent polls.

11. Dobbs is interesting at times...
He's regularly running a list of US companies that are outsourcing labor overseas... Not quite the corporate party line.

5. Actually they flat oppose it
Listened some to Rush today and he is opposed, also a couple of local AM guys who practically got the governator elected (John and Ken) are opposed. And on pretty good grounds as well - that it makes for a permanant 2nd class citizenry and encourages companies to keep wages low.

9. I heard some other comments from the dittohead crowd:
They said they sure as hell weren't happy with Gray Davis giving them driver licenses, so why in hell would they be happy about giving them jobs? Also, would you rather pay 25 cents more per head of lettuce or substantially more in taxes for social services for the new working poor?

7. they can't spin it and they know it
it's a grubby little plan designed to allow Bush's corporate vultures the opportunity to exploit more desperate people on a larger scale. No way can they spin it.

8. Dana Rohrbacher
...praised it as a national security aid. Says we're safer if we know who all those people are cutting lettuce and scrubbing toilets.

Har!

10. They'll be critical for awhile, but it won't help us.
They'll simply say "Well, if we don't do this, the Dems will put in one that's worse!"

12. You haven't heard these comments on talk radio
Limbaugh and Hannity hate the idea and vehemently disagree with Bush. I caught some of both shows today. There really isn't any spinning going on that I have heard. But they have said it is a political move that may well work.

13. Actually, I did.
I heard the first two from some guy named Larry Elder, a guy who's on KABC at drivetime in Los Angeles. The third one was from some caller.

15. Was Tweety as outraged
about this as he was about Davis' driver's license plan? He seemed to harp on that just about every night leading up to the California recall. That issue seemed to always get him hot and bothered, similar to Bush's* package in the flight suit.
