1. Look at this thread.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=993189&mesg_id=993189

FWIW, my husband is SA and wasn't bothered by it but it was a little wierd of her to say such a thing, IMHO.

SA=South Asian

2. Mrs. Clinton stuck her foot in her mouth from what I understand.
Unfortunate, maybe a little revealing in a negative sense. She's still the most admirable woman in public view along with CMB, in my opinion.

4. I think Fuzzy Zoeller is a better comparison
Anybody remember his comment to Tiger Woods, after Tiger won the Master's Golf tourney. It implied that everyone from a demographic group liked to eat a certain kind of food. Well Mr. Zoeller was criticized and lost I think a sponsorship or two. I guess he was trying to be funny as Hillary was trying to be funny.

5. It will cost her and possibly the Democratic Party
Ethnic stereotyping is a big deal to Asians and Hispanics. South Asians are wealthy and socially conservative. They are ripe to switch to the Republican Party. She has probably lost their support. If GOP leaders strongly condemn this, we will be hurt as a party. I'm afraid that we will lose some votes, but more importantly this will hurt our fundraising efforts. South Asians are small numerically but are wealthy and can play a major role in helping finance a campaign. In 2000 Indians alone contributed $9 million to campaigns and the South Asian population is growing and becoming more and more politically active as the second generation starts to enter positions of power.

9. All the money is going to the GOP?
I am sure the South-Asian fundraisers will take it as a reference about how 'if Ghandi was an immigrant he would run a gas bar in America'...or worst.

When Ghandi was an immigrant in South Africa, he was a lawyer...I think Indo-Americans might get the 'joke' about America and their treatment of immigrant stereotypes...

How much is Apu giving to the democrats?

16. It was STEREOTYPING, but not necessarily racist.
Look, people, _Jumper_ has every right to be offended, and you have every right to challenge him.

But keep this in mind: Thousands of SAs were brought over here to work in the IT boom. The industry collapsed on itself, and now they are here, unable to find work, and facing deportation. We may like to believe that SAs aren't discriminated against, but I know better. My husband is an SA, and he has been denied many jobs for which hisless qualified, less hard-working, Anglo friends were hired (fwiw, I'm an Anglo).

It makes me sick, but it is happening everywhere. My hubby doesn't look very SA, but I have seen people make hideous fun of SAs for theway they talk and the clothes the women wear, and that is just the start.

If it has never happened to you, lighten up on _Jumper_. BTW, If you think I am blindly on his side, check out the original thread, where it is clear that I am not. But if he is offended, we shouldn't dismiss him so easily.

17. _Jumper_ is right here. This is a potentially HUGE voting block.
They monitor the situation in India and Pakistan very closely; as we should be doing as well (it is a potential crisis along the lines of Israel and Palestine).

They tend to be socially conservative, but the also have seen the absolute worst examples of poverty; this makes them more apt to support social programs to combat it and other social ills.

We should be making advances toward SAs, they do have money and they will support at least moderate Democrats.

18. Sounds like you're doing some ethnic stereotyping, too...
"South Asians are wealthy and socially conservative."

Although I agree with you that it was a very stupid thing for Sen. Clinton to say....

8. Oh yeah, Hitlery has a history of targettting South Asians.
Remember all those stories about her smearing all South Asians? It's so obvious that she has a burning HATRED for all things South Asian! Man, the woman just OOZES racism! Let's not look at her record- we all know the REAL Hitlery: RACIST RACIST RACIST. She might as well get a swastika tattoo. Let's make sure in the "Rush" to condemn her we not just accidentally look at her history of supporting liberal causes...don't want to spoil the fun of a witch hunt.

PEOPLE: She was telling an absurdist joke in the tradition of Groucho Marx or Mystery Science Theatre. You need to realize this and not play into the hands of the RW spin machine.

10. We are making a big mistake if we think that
The South Asian population now exceeds the Jewish population. It is also very affluent. We cannot take it for granted. It is affluent and socially conservative. The only reason they vote Democratic is because the DP is viewed as the party of tolerance. If that is no longer the case, or perceived to no longer be the case, we will lose this vote and lots of fundraising dollars.

Also keep in mind that the GOP is the party that nominated Bobby Jindal for governor and it opposes affirmative action, a program that hurts South Asians, and Asians in general substantially in college admissions.

12. If Gandhi were alive today, he would accept Senator Clinton's
apology and move on. Why don't you? And stop saying that a lot of Asians will leave the democratic party. You don't know that.

13. How do you know he would?
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 12:00 AM by _Jumper_
Why don't I? For the same reason I and 99.9% of DU'ers didn't accept Lott's similar "apology".

A lot of South Asians will not leave the Democratic Party because of this. Surely it will cost Hillary some but it may not hurt the Democratic Party if the Republicans fail to capitalize on it. You have to realize why South Asians and other Asians are voting Democratic in the first place. The #1 reason is because the Democratic Party is viewed as the party of tolerance and the GOP is viewed as the party of racism. They didn't become Democratic in the 1990's because they believe in the Democratic economic platform or position on abortion.

They switched sides in the 1990's and it can happen again. I fear that prominent Republicans will successfully capitalize on this when the trot out Giuilani and some others--maybe even Jindal, who is of Indian descent--to attack Hillary and present themselves as the party of tolerance.

14. Psst. I'll tell you a secret.
I did accept Trent Lott's apology...and I'm, black. The idiot should have fought to keep his status in the senate but instead he became a wuss and stepped down from his leadership.

Jumper, I don't know what else I can tell you. Why don't you send Senator Hillary an email. Maybe she will respond. If she does, will that shut you up?

19. Dumb comment, but only because it was so easily misinterpreted
It was, as RKZ said somewhere above, a satirical jibe at a stereotype. However, since it is so easily misinterpreted, she shouldn't have said it.
