Dear god, this is what just came over the police scanner |
|
Single Vehicle MVA three miles east of town, children ejected from vehicle, some not conscience, driver "assumed to be father" trapped under vehicle with a faint pulse.
I know I should go, but seriously, I have a serious problem with these kind of accidents.
Update, as I was writing "they said he had a faint pulse at first, now they aren't sure he's got one at all."
I'm torn between my job and my fear.

4. Yeah, if my boss was here, I'd have to go |
|
But I have minimal interest in getting photos of accidents for the front page.

13. Sometimes, life is hard to deal with... |
|
... and having to report on the worst of it is a trial.
But, if you don't, who will? Someone who can't make sense of it all?
Maybe this is a simple matter of seatbelt use, and your investigation of this accident might encourage that use.
Shying away from the hard reality in life is not something a reporter can do, as much as one might wish to.
Think about parents in the US, getting a call that their child is dead in Iraq, and then they have to face the press.
In a way, that's what you have to do--face and report on the obvious for the public.
Hard stuff. Difficult task.

15. That's exactly why I went... |
|
When I first started, I always made apoint of going no matter what kind of thing...I went because I don't want to weaken my journalistic gumption, it's just hearing the kind of accident it was on the radio, I thought it could be traumatic.
But also, for a guy that wants to be a war correspondent one day, I'd best get used to such stuff.

One fatality, three kids just lost their father. The kids all had minor injuries..no word yet if one was ACTUALLY thrown from the car.

Lucky for me there was no gore. The deceased was still in the car which was in a field, not too close to me.

30. the photo doesn't have to be gore-filled. |
|
get close enough, to get the facial expression of one or two firefighers.
this is my beef with local tv...they always have to show stiffs in a situation like this, never any of the drama of a rescue attempt.
years ago I shot a fatal mobile home fire...i got close enough to get the lead firefighter on one hose crew inching up to a window that had flames coming from it....you could see fear and determination on the man's face...
cuppla tv stations were there too and could have gotten the same shot...but they waited around until they brought the young woman's remains out of the charred ruins to turn on their lights. And that's the tape they used. I thought, 'hey, every one knows someone has died! You told them that in the first 10 seconds! Why do you need to shake this body in front of their faces.
anyway excuse the rant. if you're not dead tired, you should go. you'll see stuff that you can't get from reading the reports or interviewing coppers etc. later.
