I gotta get outta this place...........
Okay, backgrround: I live in Greenville,SC(home to Bob Jones U) and I'm sick and tired of being here. I was moved down her by my parents in '95(kicking and screaming all the way!) from Pittsburgh. To say that this place is freeperville doesn't do it justice. It's also like living in a radioactive area, and the place is slowly sucking the life from me. I'm plotting to get out of here (at least for the summer), and hopefully something longer term.

So I'm looking for a summer internship, preferably FAR FAR away from the Southland. Only ideas I've been able to come up with are:

-working for one of the following Senate campaigns: CO(first preference), AK, IL, MO, PA
-working for one of the following House campaigns: CO-3, CO-7, PA-13, WA-8
-finding something in DC
-living with my best friend in Montreal for three months
-taking summer classes somewhere else

Longer term, I have to transfer to another college, here's the list I've come up with:

-Carleton College (Northfield,MN)
-Wheaton College, Northwestern (Chicago,IL)
-University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon(Pittsburgh, PA)
-University of Michigan (Ann Arbor,MI)
-University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Denver (Denver/Boulder,CO)
-McGill University (Montreal, QC, Canada)
-Pomona College (Metro Los Angeles, CA)

Any suggestions?

3. I'd be tempted for Montreal
All those sexy French-Canadians. On the colleges/universities you might look at the University of Texas at Austin. Austin is nothing like what most people think of Texas. It is a pretty liberal town, hilly for Texas, and the college scene is tough to beat. Check it out.

4. I've been to Austin
Nice place, like the West Berlin of Texas. However, the thought of living in the same state as Tom DeLay and the Bushes makes me wanna hurl.

5. Montreal or DC
I love Washington D.C., but it might get old staying there all summer. Montreal might be nice to get away from all the politics and spend summer in Canada.

For transferring schools... my vote goes to the University of Michigan (of course). I don't know what you want to get your degree in, but the campus is quite political. I love it here! :D

6. Montreal for the summer, then Northwestern
unless you really love Montreal and opt for McGill.

I don't think you'll find Colorado to be a big improvement over SC (I'm in Columbia, SCarolinian born and bred. I feel similarly about the need to get out, except my goal is escaping the USA entirely.). No knock on Colorado, but DUers from there frequently complain about right-wing domination there, too (particularly Colo. Springs, as I recall)

7. Contact The DNC
and see if they have any internships for the summer. DC is such an interesting city. There are people from all over the world, from every walk of life, and there are so many interesting things to see and do.

I went to Pitzer in Claremont....right at the base of the Foothills and Mount Baldy...there are several campuses you can participate in around there and it is beautiful...you are an hour away from the beach, the desert, OR the mountains...something you can't do anywhere else...and Claremont is a great community...if you can swing it...it isn't the best college on your list but you would probably enjoy the atmosphere.

16. Then Pomona might be a good call and you can transfer if you wish
once you get settled here...besides...California would be a respite from fundyville.

13. Colorado College.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 03:46 PM by MissMarple
It's in the same consortium as Pomona and Carleton. Better than Pomona. It has the block system so it's not for everyone. You take one class for 3 1/2 weeks, then have a 4 day block break. It's great because of all the outdoor activities and it's within walking distance to downtown which is becoming a restaurant/bar magnet. And the climate is to die for. It is a liberal oasis in Colorado Springs and is near an historically designated neighborhood. They've built several new dorms and some have a direct view of Pike's Peak.

If you come to Colorado you should check it out. Kids here also like Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

And we have a LOT of microbreweries.

:D

14. I am helping coordinate community outreach and voter ID efforts
for one of the candidates for the MO 3rd Congressional District Race. I work with Nancy Farmer's campaign very closely. If you choose to try to come to MO I can give you the names of the people to talk with about positions over the summer.

We will also be hiring soon. If you want one of these types of jobs, get your resume out ASAP. We are being inundated with requests right now.

19. Hmm, RDU is also a very nice area
.....but once again, I'm not a big fan of the oppressive summers at all. As a side note, ever been to Topsail Island? That place is fab.

22. if you don't like Greenville, you won't like Wheaton.
Tho a nice campus in a pleasant suburb of Chicago this is a Christian, evangelical college. Maybe not fundy like BJ, but we are still talking a pretty conservative place. Dennis Hastert is an alum of Wheaton.

I really dont know what field you are studying, but I think Ann Arbor is supposed to be pretty good for a big-ten university.

Pitt or Carnegie-Mellon would be OK, too. Pittsburgh is grossly underrated as a city. Its actually a fairly freindly place.

....that would be a great alternative to Wheaton.

NW has a good law school, so I hear.
