Casting Against Type: Odd Roles for Favorite Actors
Bill Murray in Mad Dog and Glory, playing against his usual smart-assed slacker, plays a tightly wound gangster who is actually frightening.

Any others come to mind?

10. He's played quite a few serious roles.
Some have worked out for him. I liked him in Prefontaine.

3. Samuel L. Jackson in Star Wars
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 02:55 PM by mouse7
I love Samual L. Jackson, but he's just all wrong without uninterrupted streams of profanity coming from his characters. There were probably 5 scenes in Star Wars II that were ruined because you're imagining what a Samuel J. Jackson character would REALLY say.

Christopher Lee should have been told, "Go fuck yourself.", more than a couple of times.

4. Mary Tyler Moore as a Jewish mother in Flirting with Disaster
was actually one of her best roles! That's a great movie if you haven't seen it, by David O. Russell who made Spank the Monkey and Three Kings.

5. Dick van Dyke in the Gin Game
Foul mouthed murderer. Definitely his best role since the Dick van Dyke show.

6. That is one of the funniest movies-everybody was well-cast
George Segal, Alan Alda and Lily Tomlin were all great, too.

MTM in "Ordinary People" was the real shocker. From "Mare" to cold hearted bitch.

8. Tim Robbins playing a neo-conservative folk singer in Bob Roberts
I mean there isn't anything neo-conservative about Tim Robbins. The songs in that movie are hilarious and Robbins refuses to release a soundtrack for the movie for fear neo-cons will use his songs out of context.

9. I loved that movie!
and my love is deepened by the fact I know Robbin's true political leanings.

It was also one of the most terrifying movies I have ever watched.

I really would love to have the soundtrack...it was awesome.

11. He won't sell it
He was worried that real right-wing nut jobs would use his soundtrack as a rallying cry for neo-conservatives everywhere

A soundtrack album was due for release on Warner Bros. Records, but it was not released because Robbins didn't want the songs played outside of the movie's context.
