Any Microsoft Access experts here?
I'm a total Access moron (in fact, I'm a total database moron), and there is something I'm trying to do. In short: I'm trying to import a flat-text data file into a relational database with two tables.

If this is something you might be able to talk me through, please send me a private message. Thanks.

1. The import wizard should walk you through it
I program in Access, but I don't know the import wizard step by step. Maybe if you asked a more specific question I could help.

2. What delimiters does it use?
Tab, comma, etc. Also, does it have more than 256 fields?

4. So, did the hocus pocus work?
Or do I have to whip up some abracadabra too?

5. Try this
First, I'm assuming the data you want to import is in a file named *.txt

Click on File!Get External Data!Import. A window for selecting the file will show up. Near the bottom of that window is a drop-down listbox labelled "Files of type". Click on that and select "Text files (*.txt, *.csv, *.tab, *.asc)", and then navigate to the directory where your text file is. Select your text file and click on the button labelled "Import"

The next window wants you to choose between delimited records or fixed-length records. Pick the delimited choice and click on Next.

The next window will ask you to choose the proper delimiter. Do that, and then that window will try to figure out where to break up the fields. It tends to do a good job at this, but you can review the results in the lower half of that window. If it looks right, click on Next.

The next window will let you name the new table that the data will be imported into. I suggest you import the whole text file into one table, and then write some queries to extract data from the new table and insert it into the other two tables.

6. What version Access?
I ask because 97 and earlier may require you to run the set-up program and add data access options before you can import text files.

8. I find that shaking a chicken leg at the computer works
Barring that, I just pretend that it's not very important.
