You got the haves: Boston, Yankees, Cubs..all of which can spend several times more than teams like the Pirates, Brewers, Royals.
Take my team, the Pirates. They develop these fine players, then watch them leave because they can't afford them. Barry Bonds heads the list. It's gotten to be so many I can't keep track of them all. Kevin Young and the trio that went to the Cubs are the latest.
I have gotten tired of being a fan. The fucking rich get richer. Baseball is a microcosm of the ultimate capitalistic right wing wet dream. The teams whose circumstances allow them to dominate the marketplace while the rest are forever mired in relative poverty and poor performance.
Thank God society at least provides opportunity for the poor to work hard and rise above their circumstances. Baseball does not. Oh, sure, you'll have the poor teams that overachieve for a season or two, like the A's, but you can never truly overcome the haves. It is reminiscent of the countries abroad that do not share America's upward mobility.
Let's even the fucking playing field. Revenue sharing NOW. No more fucking $200 million Yankee payroll compared to a paltry $30 million for the Pirates.

Up front: I'm a Yankees fan.

Ya know how many World Series rings are hanging on those 200 million dollar fingers? Not many.

Those rings are hanging on the fingers of payroll monsters like the Florida Marlins and before that the Anaheim Angels, and before that the Arizona Diamondback.

The Yanks have a good team and good management (except for The Boss), but they can't buy a championship, and I doubt they will again this year. While winning it all in the late 90's, the team was made up of homegrown talent and cast offs. They had heart and talent.

Now they're just a collection of past all stars. And they don't have pitching. So what the hell are you so worried about? Teams from Los Angeles to Baltimore to Texas and yes, even Boston have tried to outspend other teams in pursuit of a championship, and it doesn't work. It never does. You have to put a team together carefully, keeping in mind the division you're in, the ballparks you visit and your home ballpark. And you have to get a little lucky. Big bucks may get the girl, but it won't take home the trophy.

Yankees want Giambi? They get Giambi? They want A-rod. They get A-rod. They want Mussina? They get Mussina.
The $$ DO indeed bring home the championships. Not every year, but over a long period of time. Big market big money teams can do it.
Small market teams over the long run cannot.

Pittsburgh has a fine farm system. What do you think happens when players get to be stars for the Pirates. Ask Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Doug Drabek, Kevin Young. Tim Wakefield.....and so many others I've forgotten them by now??

Hopefully, no one gets hurt this time. I think this whole rivalry thing is getting a little out of hand. My favorite team is the Yanks, and my second favorite team is the Red Sox. I just look forward to good baseball. Game 7 was a classic for the ages.

And, btw... I think the Sox will take the division this year, though I'm not too sure about tonight...
