What do you think about System of a Down? |
|
Personally I remember when Toxicity came out and feeling like I was 12 listening to Ride the Lightning - but that's just me. How 'bout you?

3. Vocals not pretty, and kinda weak .... |
|
But DAMN are the textures rich and powerful ...
I like them, even with the weird vocals ...

5. obscure and esoteric ... |

SURELY an adherent would revel is such a 'unique' style ...
I simply find them grating and 'ugly', as it were .... But I understand where a fan would relish these qualities ...
I love the vocal styles of Lennon, Corgan, Reznor, Bowie, Gabriel, Grohl and Cobain .. ALL can dig deep and pull off that kind of gritty intensity, and still take it WAY down and smooth too .....
System's vocals remind me of Danny Elfman's vocals: VERY well suited to the Boingo style, but weak overall as a vocalist ...
IMLTHO ....

8. Very well stated. I admit Serj's vocals fill a niche. The people you site |

great examples for what you're saying. Mentioning Peter Gabriel really brought what you're saying home. You admire range (being a jazz fan I understand what you're saying). From a Metal view I feel that they are unique in their range, given the genre.
I think I agree with you when put in a broader range of comparison. Since Stevie Wonder is my favorite musician (coming in just a smidge befor Trane) I appreciate range very much. If you know Steveland Morris, you know what I'm sain'

They kind of have a sound all their own. One more important thing: THEY HAVEN'T SOLD OUT.

I'm a big fan of thier drummer, he writes parts that are just generally fun to play along to (or try, often times). Thier singer is also really cool.
