1. The Bobs.
Tongue in cheek, very clever accapella group.
They used to do music bits in B movies and on NPR.

3. Badly Drawn Boy?
That's a good start. Maybe a little Jack Johnson, then pick it up with some Sublime...

once it's moving you could even go with some extreme poli-punk and listen to some Propaghandi, then maybe some Beastie Boys.

Start bringing it back down with a little Beck, (Midnite Vultures preferably) and some Phil Ochs...

And cap it off with The Bad Plus.

Well, that's a playlist I just made in response to your post, so how about those? :)

Might start out with the Beck stuff. I haven't heard that album of his, but I like some of his other stuff pretty well.

8. Lately,

I'm really digging video game soundtracks. Being a gamer since I was a little kid, this surprises me; usually game music is downright bad. However, I've found that Silent Hill 3 has a nice intro; I think it's called "You're Not Here". Just search for "Silent Hill 3".

Final Fantasy X-2 has a cool techno intro track called "Real Emotion"; it's performed by Jade from the band Sweetbox out in CA. If you try to dl that, you'll often get the Japanese version of the original track the FFX-2 song was based on. It's the same melody with very different lyrics, and the Sweetbox version has differing and additional lyrics as well; both are longer than the game version.

I also like band and orchestra music; Alfred Reed's Armenian Dances is a very fun tune (I've performed that, it's fun and difficult in places), and Bob Margolis' Terpsichore, also for concert band, is simply a masterwork. I have the score, in fact; it's 99 pages long and is scored for, coincidentally, 99 performers.

Also on my hit parade are Stravinsky's The Firebird and a great deal of Gershwin. One tune I've been looking for that I doubt you'll find is a two piano piece by Bernstein (not the well-known one, I think this guy's first name is Seymour). The title is Concerto for Our Time. It's hard to find, even in print; I doubt you'll be able to find it for download.

Incidentally, Terpsichore can be downloaded free from the publisher's website. Simply go to http://members.aol.com/mbmband/index.html and click on any title, then look for "Download the mp3 recording" and you'll get a long list of .mp3 files they publish in print music form.

Hope I've helped you some! :)

edit: when I talked about downloading at the beginning of my post, I was assuming a filesharing application was being used, something like Gnotella, Bearshare, Limewire, etc.

9. Jack Johnson
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 01:22 AM by JaySherman
Zappa, Dave Matthews, Jethro Tull, REM, The Who, Dire Straits.

That's some stuff I've been downloading recently. Listening to Tommy right now.

If you go for Jack Johnson the live stuff is the best.

13. Acoustic folk-type rock I guess
A little hard to say. Amazon.com lists Ben Harper, John Mayer, Norah Jones, and Coldplay as similar artists. But imo he's way better than any of them, especially Mayer.

17. A few here.
If you've never heard it, try The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips.

More fun stuff...

The New Pornographers (and Neko Case's solo stuff)
The Thermals (new album coming out!)
Guster
Shonen Knife
The Weakerthans

I also agree with the person who said Phil Ochs. Excellent stuff.

18. Isn't it risky to download from KaZaA and other file-sharing services now?
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 03:13 AM by drumwolf
I thought the RIAA already started suing anyone and everyone who downloads MP3's for free. That's the reason I've stopped.

Anyway, here are my suggestions:

If you like techno/breakbeat/electronica:
- Tosca (downtempo, offshoot of Kruder and Dorfmeister)
- Asian Dub Foundation (Brits of Indian descent, music is a mish-mash of hip-hop, ragga, dub, drum'n'bass, punk rock and traditional Indian music)

If you're into jam bands or the Dead/Phish, I'd suggest downloading live recordings (as opposed to studio cuts).

If you're my age (I'm 34) and grew up on '80s bands, maybe you could download some of the hits from that era.

27. Anyone into jam bands (a la Dead, Phish, Dark Star Orchestra)
should go to sharingthegroove.org. There are 100 THOUSAND members on this board and mucho, mucho content.

Also try etree.org. They now have a bit torrent page to download live shows.

"here are many sites to download jam band type shows. Too bad other musicians aren't as kind as The Dead.

25. OK
I dig folk stuff, can't go wrong with either Guthrie or some John Prine. I like some bluegrass, too. There's a band called Railroad Earth I really enjoy that plays the Mid-Atlantic jamband circuit quite a bit.

I got some excellent Rat Pack stuff recently, including a kick-ass version of Frank and Sammy doing "Mack the Knife".

Anything off of the Superfly soundtrack is good.

Barry Sadler. Gotta be in the right mood.

Dr. Hook and the Traveling Medicine Show had a lot of wild shit.

I got some Ghetto Boys the other day. "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me" is one of my favorite rap titles ever.

Clash. "London Calling" "Guns of Brixton" "Rockin' the Casbah".

Have fun! Don't end up in the Pepsi commercial.
