How many of you have had your credit card or bank account tapped by AOL for monthly service months after you have cancelled your service?

They did it again this month!

3. I did....threw a fit and got my money back.
I bought a new lap top when visiting in Charlotte.....got a year of free aol. When the year was up, I contacted aol....not an easy task, and informed them I did not wish to continue with their services. Soon, I had a 3-month bill on my credit card. I raised heck, lots of it actually and finally got my money back. They continued to try and minimize the event and add me to their plans....

4. Same thing happened with McAfee
my husband cancelled their service after he tried (in vain) to alert them to the fact he thought their site had been hacked. The Indian tech support put him on hold until his phone calling card ran out. McAfee charged him not on our current card but on an earlier one. We're still trying to sort it out-we don't have the service, but we still have the charge on our credit card.

5. Two ideas
Throw a fit, threaten to cancel (again) and they will give you some money back and free months (which you don't want). I did that before, but don't know if they still do it.

Second one, cancel the card. I haven't paid for AOL for nearly two years now and they still haven't shut it off. They have an old card of mine. I have tried to cancel it, but they don't listen. They don't report to a credit agency so I'm not worried about that. Once in a while I still get on AOL, like last night to do the DU chat. I get a warning message, but you just click past it.

7. If
you're still using AOL, however infrequently, they can still legitimatley bill you, even if you've asked for service to be discontinued.

6. Forget the vendor when this happens
Most banks and credit card companies have a policy of siding with the customer on disputed charges and will refund/credit your account and leave it up to the vendor to try to pursue collections. If you've properly contacted the vendor to cancel service, and have discontinued using their service, speak directly to your bank.

8. Here's how you solve it..
You call your credit card company and tell them you cannot find your card.. They will issue you a new one with a different number, and when aol sends a bill to the old one, it will bounce back to them..:)

Be sure to change any automatic charges to a different card, (if you have any other aoutmatics)..

9. Once I had trouble, once none at all...
Mom had service a few years ago and when I called to cancel it for her they gave me a lot of grief about it. I had to be insistant and firm that yes, we wanted to cancel her service.

Later on, when she decided she couldn't figure Earthlink out (she was in her 80's and I was damn proud of her for even trying!), she wanted to get back on AOL. That part was easy.

When she died, I called to cancel and when I told them why, they expressed condolences and it was a done deal. No trouble at all -- this caught me by surprise.

10. AOHell my trip
Set up a new computer for a friend. Tapped my phone line to start his 12 month free Aol. Year later I got a bill. Called. Wouldn't quit billing my phone because I didn't know the password. It worked out but I learned my lesson.

Wouldn't touch aol with a millionk modem.
