Poll question: Beer: Do You Drink It Cold or Room Temperature?
I'm a room temperature Guiness girl, myself.

1. I like em all ice-cold
even Guiness. Except for English bitter. I made a batch of bitter once, and it was somewhat better at room temperature.

2. Guinness
is my primary beer. I like Murphy's and O'Hara's stouts as well. Anything lighter is "let's pretend we're drinking beer."

3. Basement temperature---------
For those without a basement, thats about 55 to 60 degrees. The warmth enhances the taste. But then again, when its 80 degrees outside, a cold one slides down pretty easy. So, its actually a variable, depending on outside temperatures.

4. Move 1 vote from ice cold to room temp
And no, I haven't had anything to drink, just clumsy fingers. I like Murphy's stout at about 50 degrees and the same for Guinness. But I really like them served to me in the pub of an inn near Clonakilty Eire. The temperature is just right and I've never had stout drafted in the US that was pour right. Every pint in Ireland has a head that last to the bottom of the glass. WooHoo.

5. It sometimes depends
In Britain, 'lager' is the beer with the bubbles.
You drink that cold.

But they also have 'Bitter' and 'Ale' that they serve at room temperature and it is really yummy.

I drink copious amounts of Guinness but don't like it warm at all.
It must be cold for me.

I am originally from Australia and we drink our beer (lager) really, really chilly cold.

6. Ice Ice Cold
But I voted #1. It has to be real cold for me. Sometimes it's a waste of money but if I 'm at the bar and i don't drink the beer fast enough I just order a new one so it's cold.

8. A Belgian White (Witbier)
I like the whites when the weather gets warmer.

Hoegaarden White and Celis White are my preferred.

11. Lager, cold. Ale, cellar temperature.
Ale is much more complex, and best enjoyed at a temperature of 55 degrees or so...otherwise you miss some of the subtleties. Lager, on the other hand, is better cold. THere's actually a reason for this...the different yeast strains used in production of ales and lagers are adapted to differing temperatures.

Lager was developed in the Alpine region of Bavaria. Brewers stored their beer in caves to keep it cool and prevent impurities caused by exposure to light, and so by a process of natural selection the yeast strains which "worked" best at low temperatures survived, and their low-temperature affinity informs the character of the beer.

Ales, on the other hand, were developed in England and Belgium, where there are no mountain caves, so the English and Belgians stored their beer in cellars. Ale yeasts "work" at higher temperatures, which leads to a greater complexity of chemical reaction and thus a more complex end product.

(See, there's a REASON why the Brits drink their beer "warm"...tey know what they're doing...)
