4. Well Eisenhauer was republican...
but he was a great millitary commander for us and so I hate to diss the guy.

Grant's presidency was a mess but look at what he did for the union during the civil war. You know, I guess he gets my vote as the best.

6. Ike
Never led troops in combat. Yet he was Commander of Allied Forces in WWII. Not that he did a bad job by any means, but that seems strange to me. Also Patton (my personal fave) knew and told everyone that Ike would be running for Pres. without Ike ever telling him. Those two are interesting contrasts Ike the general of the future who was a politician as much as army man, and Patton the old war horse.
