Poll question: Cover charges SUCK!!!!!!!
I went to a bar last night. County music themed. :puke: It was a hetero bar and for the outdoor sign they used big purple and pink neon tubes...

Anyway, it cost $7 to get in and the drinks were outright expensive!

1. Yes.. cover charges suck.. but..
when you go to see original bands (ie: not top 40 cover bands..), they get paid by what the door takes in. When you go to see cover bands, they get paid out of the till, so the cover charge is even more insulting, I think. $7 just to walk through a doorway? Fuck that.

2. Yes...and they're really bad on New Years Eve...
$20 just to get in a bar, with standing room only, just for a glass of champagne at midnight? No thanks...

6. 20 bucks?
here in NY, try $100 or $150!

$20 is the cover every day at a jazz club or comedy club

3. At least they didn't have a drink minimum
Now that's bad. 2 drinks can usually ring you up close to 7 dollars and then many of those places expect a tip too.

The whole idea of cover charges is pretty bad but the places have to make their money I guess. To encourage females to drop by, many of them have "Ladies get in free until midnight" offers.

The worst (in my case since I'm only 19) is that some bars let girls in who are 18 and over while guys have to wait until they're 21 to get into the same bar. :( Makes NO sense!

4. I can only ask: What the hell got into you???!!!!
A country themed bar??????? Did the band play "Rawhide" or maybe "It's Five O'clock Somewhere"

Wow. Thou hast more courage than me-eth.

Oh - bar cover charges are worth it if the band is enjoyable and the atmosphere congenial. As for drink prices, I don't want anyone to ever tell me again that inflation isn't alive and well in the good ole US of A.

8. It's a long story...
The worst part was, there were hetero guys who dressed up in outfits gay guys wore during the 90s! Oooh, they are so brave when adopting to sartorial styles discarded a long time ago by the real trendsetters! x( :eyes:

5. I've seen reasonable covers
I won't pay a cover charge if it is steep. There are plenty of other places to go. Why did you go into this bar if it is country western and costs $7?

7. I don't like paying cover for the sake of drinking somewhere
Nor do I understand bar-hopping when each bar has a cover charge. (Let's pay $10 to drink here, then let's go somewhere else and pay $10 to drink there? Not that I'm into bar-hopping to begin with.)

I'm OK with paying a cover when there's an actual band worth seeing.

10. Live Music is in TROUBLE
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 02:23 PM by benburch
Folks, live music is in trouble.

I was talking with my good friend, Blues Diva Candye Kane (http://www.candyekane.com/) and she says that it is getting really difficult to tour any more. Gasoline is double what it was four years ago, and everything else is more expensive. The only thing that has not gone up is how much she & her really excellent band make for a gig!

Check out Candye's music! You really MUST see her (despite the cover charges) if she comes anywhere near you on tour!

12. cover charges are okay, as long as the drinks are cheap!
but around here, Boston, some places have a $20 cover!!!!!!! WTF?

I refuse to go to those places. Too pretentious. Too loud. Just a nasty meat market. Ick.

Denver does it right. Lots of music places have covers 2-6 bucks, but usually the drinks are very reasonable.
