2 in 5 internet users now have broadband
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040418/ap_on_hi_te/broadband_study_1

NEW YORK - Two in five Internet users in the United States now have high-speed access at home as telephone companies slash prices to better compete with cable broadband services.

In a report Sunday, the Pew Internet and American Life Project placed the adult residential broadband population at 48 million, or one-quarter of all adult Americans.

Among college-educated adults age 35 and younger, penetration has reached 52 percent.

Most of the growth has been since November from connections over souped-up phone lines called DSL, which now make up 42 percent of the home broadband market, up from 28 percent in March 2003. Cable modems still have the lead, with a market share of 54 percent, but they no longer enjoy a 2-to-1 edge.

2. my only broadband option is direcpc, or whatever it's called
But it's about $100/month, and I don't dig that. And the band isn't really that broad anyway, so I'm using 56k for now.

3. Even my dad, in his sixties, has broadband
internet access and he LOVES it.

He also knows how to stream Air America Radio and listen to Al Franken's show. (He's a big liberal in a sea of Rush dittoheads.)

I told him he would love broadband and he does. The concept was a little foreign to him at first. "You mean I'm ALWAYS online?" "Yes, Dad." "Hmm. So I *never* have to wait to dial in?" "No, Dad" "And it doesn't tie up the phone line?" "No, Dad." "Okay, I'll try it."

He watched NASA land the Rovers on Mars by streaming NASA TV through RealPlayer. He was impressed.

Now he checks DemocraticUnderground.com every day to see what's going on in politics!
