Spotted this interesting article about the possible dangers of blowing your nose:

"I'm willing to entertain the possibility that my mama was wrong when she told me it was good to blow my nose when I had a cold instead of sniffing it back." But if the idea of swallowing your excess mucus isn't too appetising.

This is generally done outside (although I will admit I saw my father do it into a sand ashtray at a hotel once, thought I was going to die).
