Celebrate May Day at Belle Isle -- Detroit, Michigan
May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, is the original holiday of working people. It started here, in America, in 1886, as a part of the struggle for the eight-hour day. But this is one of only a handful of countries around the world that does not celebrate it. Instead, our history has been taken from us and replaced with appeals to "law" and "loyalty."

In a time of open "class warfare," war overseas and attacks on our democratic rights at home, it is more important than ever that we come together. To successfully fight for our futures, we must take back our history. We must honor those who fought for us in the past and remember the lessons of those struggles.

Come join us for food, music, discussions and fun. Also, come and meet working people running to represent your interests in Lansing. Most of all, come join us in sending a message that working people will fight for their rights and their livelihood.

* We must join in solidarity to demand universal health care and education!
* We must join in solidarity to demand jobs, a living wage and a return of the eight hour work day!
* We must join in solidarity to confront the rightwing crusade against gay/lesbian/bi/trans working people!
* We must join in solidarity to defend against the assaults on affirmative action that affect working women and people of color!
* We must join in solidarity to end war and imperialism that has already claimed the lives of millions of working people worldwide!
* We must join in solidarity to reclaim our democratic rights and extend them into our workplaces and communities for the sake of all humanity!

1. Have they cleaned Belle Isle up in recent years?
I'm just curious. It's been about 15 years since I've spent any significant amount of time in the Detroit metro.

2. well I live half a country away
But I hear what you say. BTW we have a Belle Island here too. It used to be a civil war prison camp- part of the wall is still standing. A ball bearing factory around 1900. Now it is a park on the river in the middle of the city.
