Best song influenced by The Byrds (nominations please) |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 08:26 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
You know The Byrds' sonic template of course, chiming Rickenbacker guitars, 12-string rhythm textures, vocal harmonies and soaring melodies. A sound influential enough to become it's own musical sub-genre. What, to your mind, are the shining examples of this style? Feel free to nominate songs that push the envelope out, songs that maintain that essential Byrdsness but take it somewhere else sonically. For me, I'll throw in a few to get the ball rolling; Aimee Mann - Fifty Years After The Fair (featuring one Roger McGuinn) Teenage Fanclub - Ain't That Enough Primal Scream - Velocity Girl Orange Juice - Falling and Laughing Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon The Mutton Birds - She's Been Talking Big Star - September Girls (of course) Crowded House - Distant Sun My Bloody Valentine - I Don't Need You Husker Du - Could You Be The One (pushing it, but I detect an inherent Byrdsness)
What about you lot?

4. I was debating putting So. Central Rain in, likely my favourite REM song. |
|
But I forgot. I don't know why.

8. XTC: Mayor of Simpleton |
|
Among others, like the Dukes of Stratosphear psychedelic parodies.
The Beatles were well aware of the Byrds, and one could make a case for Byrds influence on several tunes on Beatles 65, Rubber Soul, etc.
Anything with a heavily compressed guitar playing arpeggios owes a technical debt to McGuinn and his producers. Happens that's the way I like to play, but I've been a pretty consistent Byrds aficionado since junior high school.

10. Yeah, definitely Mayor of Simpleton. |
|
I excluded the Beatles, because they and The Byrds cross-pollinated. George did state the If I Needed Someone was his take on The Byrds' version of Pete Seeger's Bells of Rhymney. And Your Bird Can Sing could also be chalked under the Byrds influence column.

11. Yeah, a lot of the US mid-eighties underground was Byrds influenced. |
|
That, plus the whole Paisley Underground scene.

13. You would think I'd have something to add |
|
But frankly, all that came to mind was R.E.M.'s "Reckoning" in it's entirety. I also have a vague idea of a Belle & Sebastian song(s) that I think sound(s) like the Byrds. Oh, and a lot of Tom Petty songs, but I'll be damned if I can remember their names this early.
You would think that as I listened to Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, 5D, and Younger Than Yesterday pretty much nonstop from August to December I'd have something more to add.

16. Yeah, I was trying to think of a Pixies song that was obviously Byrdsian |
|
Funnily enough, I kept coming back to their cover of Neil Young's 'Winterlong'....Hang on, I completely forgot Neil Young.

17. How could I forget Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Buffalo Springfield. |
|
Particularly 'Burned' and 'Mr Soul'. From Neil's solo output, I'd take 'Cinnamon Girl', 'Powderfinger' and 'Old Man'

18. That whole late-80's jangle scene could not have existed without The Byrds |
|
The Sundays, The Pastels, Heavenly et al. Same goes for all those Shoegazers, like Ride, Chapterhouse, The House of Love and all that lot.

20. Chris Hillman deserves more respect for shaping The Byrds sound. |
|
And for trying to maintain the Byrds hairstyle for so long despite having naturally curly hair. Props to Chris!

23. Lots of Tom Petty stuff is Byrd-influenced |
|
American Girl comes to mind. I'm not a huge Petty fan (I like some of his stuff), anyone else have any Petty suggestions?
I love those Byrds. "Eight Miles High" is my favorite.
