1. Thanks for the info. I 've been thinking about buying the eMac with
the superdrive for its value. I already have a G3 ibook, and wanted to get another to replace my old PowerPC, but decided against it cause it didn't have the superdrive, and only came with OS X. I like the iMacs, but you can get an iBook for about the same price. Do you think prices on the eMacs are going to come down? Will definitely have to look into the new iBooks!

Avid Mac user since 1984!

2. Cheap eMacs

eMac G4/1.25GHz 256/40/Combo Drive 17-inch costs $799
eMac G4/1.25GHz 256/80/SuperDrive 17-inch costs $999

Those are thru apple

Go to this site - www.dealmac.com and search for emac and you will find a lot of great deals on eMacs

for example:
<snip>
The factory-refurbished eMac G4/800 128/40/CD/100BT 17-inch CRT sans modem fell to $479 at The Apple Store.

4. Can you give me some info on buying factory-refurbished models? What are
the pros and cons? Was there something wrong with them?

5. if you are nervous about it, don't do it - but here is a summary
refurbs are computers that have been returned, and then checked over and recertified by Apple. Then they are given a full warranty.

Here is a link that describes the refurbishing process:
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/SpecialDealsText.html

Sometimes they are returned because of hardware failure (bad hard drive, bad ram).

Sometimes they are returned because the buyer couldn't figure out how to work it. or decided they wanted a different model (a powerbook instead of an emac, for example).

Some people say that you are getting a more reliable computer because the factory really goes over them w a fine teeth comb.

3. the current eMcs are a great deal
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 09:24 AM by Zech Marquis
you're getting a very powerful desktop at $999 that can make great DVDs--and if you're a pro video maker, tehre were some very good announcements made by Apple yesterday at NAB. Final Cut Pro HD, Motion, DVD Studio Pro 3...

right now the eMacs start at $799, and these aren't stripped down to say the least. If you want a very good Mac desktop, you HAVE to try them out. They use the exact same memory type and system bus as the iMacs. I would get a combo eMac right now, but I have a feeling I'll be moving this fall, so wwhy buy a system I can't take with me to say, Japan? That's the only negative thing about the eMac, but I strongly recommmend it anyway :-)
