The winner was John J. McDermott and he did the course in 2hrs and 55min, but the course was only 24.5 miles long. It wasn't until 1927 that they lengthened the race to the Olympic standard of 26.2 miles

They wanted the race to pass one of the Queens "castles" so the race became 26 miles 384 yards (26.2) at least that is the story that I have heard.
