I am LOVING the DVR cable box (TiVo-esque) |
|
Digital Video Recorder
I went to the Comcast office on Saturday and got it. Very easy to install and man does it have some features.
I have already set it to record M*A*S*H this afternooon-DAMN I forgot to set it for Crossfire
Not only does it record up to 30 hours of shows but it only costs $10 a month. Compare that to the COST of a TiVo and the monthly fee ($25) and the DVR wins hands down.
There is one feature that is at the same time cool and sorta weird. There is a button you can hit to replay the last 15 seconds (Oh is that going to be sweet come football season) and you can rewind anything you are watching....but you can also fast forward through a movie that is airing right now or any show that has already aired once. I think that is kinda weird.
The only problem I have with it is that you can't record one thing and watch another.
Still IT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Disc based video recording is the only way to go!! |
|
Sorry to say, but the PVR I have from Dish Network is even better than your Comcast one. I can record 100 hours on mine, and can rewind as far back as the first point I turned on the dish or last changed the channel. Yes, it is unbelievably kewl.
One drawback, you can't record one thing and watch another on the same TV. If I want to record and watch I have to go upstairs and watch on the 23 inch TV while whatever records in the basement.

The one I got from Cox only records about 30 hours at a time, but....
I can record one thing and watch another, or even record two things and watch a third that I've already recorded.
I can rewind back one hour, or when I last changed the channel.
It's not perfect, there are a few minor changes I'd like made, but it's not bad at all. I won't part with it, I can tell you that.
And I've only run up against the recording capacity a couple of times.

2. How's the channel selection interface? |
|
I've got Comcast, with the HD box for the HD channels, and a TiVO for everything else. The TiVO interface is 1000% better. It has three ways to view the channel lineup. In one, I can hide channels I don't get (like HBO, Showtime, etc) in another, I can show only my favorites, and of course, I can show all of the channels. With the Comcast box, it shows all of them, period. That's a real pain in the ass, especially when I use the box for only six channels. I don't want to have to scroll through the other 250 to see the six in which I'm interested. Also, with the Comcast box, the channel guide always comes up on channel 2. With TiVO, it comes up on the channel I'm watching.
So, is your box like my Comcast box, or does it approach the quality of the TiVO interface?

4. I'll have to check that out but the delay is annoying |
|
When we first got digital I couldn't stand the remote (really poorly designed the old one I had was perfect) and the delay and the on screen ads bugged the hell out of me. We set it to 3 seconds but I know it takes longer than that.
Ooooh if I could set to scan on my favorites (I watch 4-5 shows at a time) that would be awesome.
