3. Yes, but
only insofar as that if the tables were turned and a white guy did the exact same skits, he'd be lynched by now. There shouldn't be a double standard for political correctness in our society.

7. there isn't
It's just that no white people are as funny as Dave Chappelle.

A white person could get away with racial humor, but he'd have to be as funny as Chappelle is.

26. Mel Brook's has that penchant...
...for going way over the top to prove a point. Blazing saddles was definitely right in your face with the racism, and got you: a)laughing you rear end off, and b)talking about it. The genius part of the movie, is that Mel got Richard Pryor to write most of the jokes, and that added tons to the rawness of the whole movie.

I love that movie. Only Mel Brooks could have gotten away with that.

Not to mention getting away with Slim Pickin's making a rape joke funny. That is a tough sell.

13. But it takes certain skill
To be able to approach touchy issues like race without offending people. So even though there may be comedians who are funnier than Chappelle, that doesn't mean that they are able to broach touchy subjects as well as Chappelle can.

37. That list was shite
They put never-funny asshat Dennis Miller above Andy Kaufman, for Allah's sake. Tell me that ain't a f*cked up call. I think we need to check who put that list together, first-- it looked like it was done by a bunch of insecure WASP males and old jewish comics who they flew in from the Catskills.

And how the hell did Colin Quinn even get onto the top 100 anyway? He's never been anything but an annoying cracker who turned everything he touched into crap! He sucked on Remote Control, blew on SNL, and does the physically impossible by both sucking AND blowing on Tough Crowd!

Dave Chappelle is one of the funniest guys around today. No doubt.

31. the double standard: like powder and rock cocaine?
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 12:47 PM by noiretblu
the double standard in terms of sentencing? or would that double standard be racial profiling leading to "driving while ______" stops, ticketing and arrests? would that be the same double standard that got amadou diallo 41 bullets for reaching for his ID? life expectancy, infant mortlaity rates, rates charged for mortgages and loans...other areas where double standards exist.

"PC" is hardly a double standard worth noting, considering all the REAL double standards in this society...but it is a great weapon of mass distraction to breed resentment...and indiffernce to real double standards.

35. I see where you're coming from
I do think this is a bigger problem than you acknowledge though. I just fear that we're going to wind up with a large racist backlash if the envelope keeps getting pushed like this.

As I'm typing this, I'm starting to realize that there are racist people out there probably just using this type of humor as an excuse for attitudes would have anyway. I don't know... I guess I'd rather not give them that excuse, but I'm starting to see where you're coming from.

But because I don't really understand, I don't really have a hard opinion on it. I don't think there should be a difference, but there obviously is and nothing is going to be done about it one way or another anyway.

49. Here's the difference.
"nigger" is a racist word. One should assume that the person using the word "nigger" is a racist.

Barring a few exceptions, such as:

1. The context I just used it in, i.e. discussing the word itself.

2. Black people using it. Obviously black people aren't racist towards black people, barring exceptionally rare instances.

3. Fictious dialogue.

As Dave Chapelle put it: " 'you should cancel the Dave Chapelle show, because he's an obvious racist.' I'm sorry. I didn't think it was that obvious."

57. I understand THAT part
I don't understand the more complex argument about why it's okay for black people to call each other "niggers". The point you made about black people obviously not being racist towards themselves makes some sense and goes towards what I'm talking about, but there are more exceptions than you let on (ie. using the word against each other in a fight. It's obviously being used in a derogatory manner in these instances.)

20. Sure there should
Big difference between someone from a culture with the power to oppress a culture and a history of oppressing cultures making fun of another culture, and someone from an oppressed culture with no power to oppress trying to gain some dignity for his culture through humorous and satirical jabs at the oppressing culture.

Huge difference. Don't fall for the conservative attempts to equate the two.

Sometimes this show is the funniest thing around, sometimes it isn't that great. Aside from "The Passion of the Jew" the Rick James show may be the hardest I have laughed this season.

I would like to see George Carlin on a skit show like this. I think he could find time to properly offend everyone. Probably have to be on HBO or something though to get the full effect.

I loved the gas station scene, when the good old boys were going after him for being black, and he started hurling the N-word with the best of them. Damn, that was funny!

Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories also kick ass (both the Rick James AND Prince ones), as did the whole Wayne Brady episode. And of course the sheer hilarity of the "Niggar Family" could not go unmentioned, either!
