7. The frogs!
They come to the vernal pools to mate when the temperature is right. The temperature was right as of last Friday! They sang all night and have been doing so every night since.

If I got some nookie after a winter of sleeping, I'd sing too!

20. Of the many varieties of frogs
my favorite is the "peeper," a tiny, tree-frog sized type that inhabit the local swamps, ditches, and ponds. There are hundreds (probably thousands) in this "neighborhood" .... and their song is so beautiful!

Where I'm from in Florida, summer usually isn't a good thing. It's nice in spring and in the winter here. Summers are too much. :(

21. the first week of sustained 90-degree and -percent weather
the first migrating termite queen to ignite in the halogen lamp,
the first McMansion subdivsion to go up in flames,
the first Summer Crusade of hard-faced, boot-camp Crystal Cathedral SA teens and half-million crowds of yearning-, aching-faced people at Christian/Mammon rock/rap/skaterpunk bands,
the first conquest and subjugation of a city by Wal*Mart in its summmer campaign in the Great Secret Corporate War,
the first grovelling for "love offerings" by some LSD nightmare of a televangelist on a ten-foot 24K throne studded with fist-sized Barrick diamonds,
the first wave of paintballers punching holes in all the cacti and taking over all the open spaces all day long,
the first vicious mauling of a cougar by a person,
the return of the swallows to Capistrano and their subsequent mowing down by the Suburb Militia,
the first wave of crap on cable ("two hundred channels and nothing to watch").
I don't like my Orange County very much.

26. "The Boys are Back In Town"
For some reason that always means summer to me. When I was a kid it was commerical for a Honday dealership. Whenever you heard "spread your wings, fly away, its a Manchester Honda kinda of day" you knew summer was coming.
