You know, gin, a wee bit of vermouth, and an olive -- A MARTINI!

Nothing else compares, in fact, nothing else should even dare to call itself a martini. Chocolate-tini? Apple-tini? Please. Posers and wannabes. A pox on them, they are the devil's work!

44. Here, here, too. and do you know where the so called Vodka Martini
came from. Product placement in the James Bond movies. It's supposed to be the first example of product placement in the movies. A Vodka company paid to have the Vodka Martini mentioned and shown.

Makes me puke when I hear young punks speak of any Martini not having gin.

I keep my Bombay in the freezer ;cause I hate the taste of any water from ice in my drink. Add a drop of scotch.... one drop.... I have a bottle with an eye dropped with scotch......... and a tea spoon of olive juice from the olive jar. A cold, unwatered, dirty Martini.

47. I did not know that about the Vodka Martini
It figures it would be a product placement deal though, those Hollywood bastards!!!!

I like your idea with the scotch-- I'm a big single-malt drinker, an affliction I picked up from living in the UK after college. I may have to try that!

For the extra-extra-extra dry martini, take at least two shots of gin, chilled of course, and then take your dry vermouth across the room, open it, and keep it open for about two minutes until the vermouth scent wafts to the glass. Any longer may be too wet for some tastes, however.

;)

9. the gin martini
The classic that NEVER goes out of style.

8 parts dry gin to 1 part dry vermouth, shaken of course, served in a cool glass (no ice, please) with an olive for garnish (or a coctail onion for you Gibson fans).

Honorable mention must also go to the Saki-tini, too!

11. "Gin martini" is redundant.
A martini, by definition, is made with gin.

A "vodka martini" is a different drink entirely (and, IMHO, an abomination).

41. Hear Hear ...
A martini is a martini--the rest are cocktail pretenders!

Of course, it is too bad that people look down on the fine old mixed drink ... there's nothing wrong with them, so why pretend they're something else?

Anyone else a fan of the Americano as a pre-dinner drink?

51. Yes, I:m in Japan!
But even here, the martini of MY continued choice is the sapphire martini, very dry, and STIRRED, not shaken.

Remember, people, James Bond always said *shaken* not because that:s the right way, but because it is an UNUSUAL way, and he wanted to have it his way. Nothing wrong with shaken, really, but I:m not a dan of it - gets too much air into the drink.

Last night for me, though, was many varieties of sake at Kizuwara Sake brewery (all DELICIOUS!) and then some Kirin 1497, a Kyoto specific brew by Kirin. Very light (but not lite) and mild - not my first choice in beer, as I like them a little heftier, but for what it is, an excellent beer.

Mostly, though, since we are riding our bikes most of the time and there:s a lot of traffic here, I:m not drinking except at home, and then the choice of drink is the martini. Sadly, we ran out of sapphire, and in a pinch, since it was my second day here and I was off on my own late at night, I took the first gin I couyld find, and it was Gilbey:s. Not bad, but it ain:t no sapphire, not by any stretch. But drinkable.

And those appletinis and chocotinis are abominations. They are not martinis -^ they are cocktails, for one thing, so use *martini* as a generic term for *cocktail* is an abomination.

And also, they are too sweet. A chocotini is okay after dinner as a dessert (I:ve had some good ones), but not at any time when one would drink a cocktail. Aplletinis are too gross for words, and are dirnks that teenagers would drink to hide the taste of alcohol so they can get drunk without gagging on the taste of GOOD liquor.

:HI: and konichiwa RBNYC! Thanks for thinking of.

And again, apologies for weird punctation. Japanese keyboard has many of them in the wrong place.

Though who:s to say the baby might not a little bombay in the milk once in a while?

No, scratch that, of course I:m only kidding. I:d never suggest a woman do that.

21. The *perfect* dirty martini.
Place ice cubes in martini glass and add a splash of vermouth. Swirl contents until glass is chilled, then discard contents. Remove bottle from freezer and add 2 jiggers of 'Bombay Dry', 'Boodles' or other top shelf gin to glass. Add one small splash of olive juice and 2 olives. Swirl once and serve.

:D

54. Oooh, Plymouth Gin is nice!
have you tried Magellan Gin? It:s has the awesome fruitiness of the Plymouth, but not quite so cloying. Also, Magellan is a beautiful sapphire color (Bombay Sapphire take note!) and NOT due to dyes, but do the herbs/whatever used in it.

I don:t know how long it:s been around - I saw my first bottle a couple months ago. But I loved every drop of it, more so than Plymouth, and I ALSO liked the Plymouth.

Yummy!!

56. Recipe for the perfect martini:
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 08:09 AM by GOPisEvil
2 oz. gin of your choice
ice
shaker
picture of Gaspare Campari, the inventor of vermouth
martini glass
olives

Pour gin into shaker with ice. Shake. Show martini glass the picture of Gaspare Campari. Pour gin into glass. Garnish with an odd number of olives.

Edit - there is a bar in Austin that employs a really gorgeous bartender from Bulgaria. While I was shamelessly hitting on her one evening, I asked her to make me her specialty drink. She made the best apple martini I have ever tasted. It was like an apple Jolly Rancher. So, if Olga, the hot Bulgarian bartender is serving drinks, her apple martini gets the vote. Oh, she had a boyfriend. :eyes:

58. 2 oz.?
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 08:12 AM by Rabrrrrrr
A martini is just starting after the first 2 oz. are downed.

I like the 8 oz. martini - big enough to be sippable for a while and get all the intricacies of the tastes out without having to keep bothering the bartender, but not so big that it gets warm before it:s done. The 10 oz. martini, while fun in it:s own way, is just too big. No, scratch that - the FIRST 10 oz. is fun, because one is thirsty and drinks it faster. But once the cigars are in their second quarter hour and the conversation has hit its stride with all parties agreeing on the subject and discussing it fully, with even and tempered tones as gentlemen and gentlewomen should be wont to do, and the booze only used thenceforth as a light tongue loosener that honesty might prevail, the 10 oz. gets too warm by the time one finishes it due to the more largo tempo of the sips.

A Martini is a Martini - not something choco-caramel-lime-... .
If I want something sweet, I pick a Caipirinha or a Mojito, not some strange Cocktail named "Martini" for reasons unknown to me.
