Better drums: Yamaha Oak Custom or Drum Workshop?
As I put together my drumset, I now consider my bass and snare drums. I play heavy metal.

I am looking at really high-end instruments for those; two that stand out are Drum Workshop and Yamaha Oak Custom. Yamaha claims theirs are "the loudest drums you will ever play"; DW is the choice of Neil Peart.

I had the opportunity to play the DW stuff, and it's truly sweet; I haven't seen the Yamahas.

If you've played the Yamaha Oak Custom, what do you think of it?

1. YAMAHA
I'm a professional musician, and I sell Yamaha pianos for a living now, but I've sold every single musical instrument/accessory YAMAHA has made. You simply cannot go wrong with YAMAHA. Their attention to detail and customer service are second to none.

Failure.

2. They are fecking LOUD.
Oak drums are heavy and loud.

DW in my opinion makes shit drums these days. Overpriced Keller shells...just crap.

Yamaha is awesome still, and those drums are supposed to cut like a mofo...I would try them out. Perfect for metal, though.

3. Yamaha makes GOOD drums!
The DW stuff is way overpriced, in my experience. I used to sell drums for a living, by the way.

I had a chance to spend an evening playing my friend's Yamaha Oak Custom snare a few weeks ago and it was sweet, sweet, sweet. Recorded very nicely, with a lot of fat and plenty of crack.

If it's loud you're really after, get a Pearl 6.5" brass free-floating snare. Now that is one wickedly loud drum.

Wear ear protection, no matter what drum you end up with.

Trust me on that...
