4. Driving school...

when I owned one, a fair number of my students were people who hadn't driven in a while and wanted to get used to it again before going out on their own.

My mother hadn't driven in almost 20 years, and had this problem when she moved. We found a local driving school that worked out very well.

5. You can take a "refresher course" at a driving school

if you don't want to bother a friend. After I passed my driver's test, I asked for and was allowed to take two more lessons because I hadn't driven on a highway or after dark. Later on, I had to rent a car after not driving for six months, and felt quite nervous about it. So I first went to the local DMV and picked up the latest manuals--just reading through them gave me the confidence boost I needed.

6. Just come to Florida. They'll give a license to anyone

and those of us that live here full-time are getting pretty good at defensive driving.

7. Some basic legal concerns.

1. Has your license expired? If so, you cannot legally drive in either the issuing state or any other state.
2. Have you changed your legal residence from the issuing state to another state? If so, your new state probably has a law stating that you must obtain a license from the new state within "x" amount of days. At that time, you will be asked to surrender the license from your previous residence. If your original license has expired, you are back to square one in terms of taking a written exam, as well as a driving test.
3. Drivers are only allowed to be licensed in one state. This law was implemented to prevent insurance fraud, and particularly to keep long distance truck drivers from continuing to drive when they had lost their licenses for repeated driving violations.
4. Your auto insurance probably includes a clause invalidating it if you are in violation of the licensing laws of your place of residence.
4. Remember that driving on public roads is a privilege, not a right, and you gotta jump through all the legal hoops to protect yourself and all of us who share the roads with you.

Call your state legislator/representative's district office and ask them to fax/mail you a copy of the state's laws on driver licensing.

8. Go out late at night

when no one's around. That's how I taught my girlfriend's kids and myself how to drive a stick shift. Stick to non-busy residential roads for awhile and get a feeling for the car. Then gradually move on to bigger stuff. Get totally comfortable before you try it during the day.
