What was the most hellish decade to be an American?

I realize there have been rougher times, but I kept it to the relatively modern era for the sake of convenience.

Try the 1860s.

6. Certainly a bloody war for no logical reason would always count as awful..
...but at least in the 1860's, they kept it local and weren't pissing off the rest of the planet with a stupid and senseless war.

8. CORRECT-THE 1860s : The Civil War
Let us all hope that this current decade does not exceed the 1860s as to the misery index. ...Oscar

4. Uh
Those are all in separate decades...

1919 -- obvious
Depression -- 30's
WW2 -- 40's

3. I would say the 30's but
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 04:35 PM by camero
people were more likely to help each other back then from what my grandfather would tell me about things such as shared gardens, one person in a household quitting their jobs if they both worked so someone in another household could have one since there were few jobs(it was usually the woman which I thought was discriminatory but that was then. I'm glad that changed a little), and other things.

People are just more likely to just look out for themselves now and fewer of us know how to grow food which will make this decade much worse.
