15. Chickadee is the Maine state bird
but then, Massachusetts was once a part of Maine.

These are incredibly friendly little creatures

If you are patient, you can get them to eat from your hand.

They were revered by the native Indians as being brave little birds.

They are so cute.

64. I have to tell this story about our resident Cardinal
They mate for life, I am told. And they are a cute little pair also. An endearing courtship ritual is that the male Cardinal feeds the female a snippet or two before mating. I have seen them perform this lovely little ritual several times now over the years, He picks up something from the ground and presents it to her and actually feeds her.

But once mated, the male cardinal never shuts up. He is singing from morning to night, in snow storms and in rain, from the break of dawn to evening sunset. Rignbt now the female can be seen with straw and nesting materials building a nest somewhere.

Once we heard this loud persistent pecking --and lo and behold, we found the male cardinal, all revved up with his hormones, attacking his own image in the side mirror of our truck! He perceived his own image as a rival! LOL

He kept it up so vigorously that we feared for his safety, so we covered the mirror up with duct tape

Not to be deterred from attacking any other male contender to his female, he went next door, and proceeded to attack nis own image in the neighbor's side mirror on his truck!

16. most embarrassingly. . .
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 07:42 PM by stellanoir
From the dinkiest state with the largest name. . . the state of "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" is represented by the Rhode Island Red Rooster. Even more embarrassingly, it was initially bred in my hometown. We have two plaques to prove it.

When travelling in Europe many years ago, people had two responses when I stated where I was from. It was either, "Oh that's part of New York," or "Oh that's where the chickens come from."

If I posted a picture it might traumatize someone.

20. The endangered nene, or Hawaiian goose

Behold the power of the nene:

http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/hawaii/nene/

By 1957, when the Nene was named as Hawaii’s State Bird, rescue efforts were underway. Conservationists began breeding the birds in captivity in hopes of preserving a remnant of the declining population and, someday, successfully re-establishing them in their native habitat.

A neat trick, that, being named as our state bird in 1957, considering we weren't a state until 1959!!!

33. Well, thats really not fair...
I thought the WI state bird was the Robin, they must have gotten lazy after 29 states....

Update: Guess you learn something new every day, apparently the Robin is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan and Wisconsin. That's taking laziness a little too far, aren't there more birds out there?
