1. The world still hasn't gotten over the effects of the 30 Years War

It devastated Germany and took them 60-80 years to get over, by which time they were stuck playing catchup with the other Western European nations. This created a sense of permanent aggrievement that ultimately led to the rise of Hitler.

I shudder to think of what dragons' teeth we're sowing in the Middle East today that may not hatch out for another 300 years.
