You know what they say: One man's wig collection is another man's art.
Digging through the trash one day at SFRecycling and Disposal's Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center -- a fancy name for the town dump -- Rick Carpenter found a five-gallon bucket of wigs. He stuffed the contents into shrink tubing and made a 14-inch sphere he calls "Hairball."
"It looks skanky, let me tell you," he says with a laugh.
For the past three months, it has been Carpenter's job to dig through our garbage. He's the 43rd and latest artist in residence at the dump.
Carpenter prefers to sculpt with scrap metal, but he's intrigued by anything thrown away in bulk. One of his favorite pieces is a weaving he made from about 40 re-spliced orange extension cords.
