Favourite truly disturbing supernatural tales? Black Eyed Kids for me.
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 10:01 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
A personal favourite of mine is the Black Eyed Kids phenomena, which was first documented, AFAIK, here.

I'm warning you, though, it's seriously disturbing.

What are your favourites?

2. There's an attached FAQ, the guy swears to it.
I have no idea whether it's true, but I love these stories, because they tell us a lot about our culture and what we fear. It doesn't matter to me whether or not it's true (I'm a little sceptical) it's a fantastic story.

7. There's something primal and terrifying about it.

It may well be an urban myth, but even if it is, it's a damn good story.

13. That's a good one!
My favoite of all time is the guy who was at a gas station and people pulled up in a pickup truck...the guy noticed we the people opened the door, the inside of the truck was completely black, like it was a rip in reality or something.

And then there were the guys in suits who would buy up *all* the bay formula in gocery stores late at night...

14. Ooh, rips in reality.
There's a great story from Victorian London about a couple who rented a hotel room, only to find the floor dissolve and feel themselves start to be sucked into another dimension. Mucho bizarro.

15. I read about something 20 years ago that still freaks me out
It was a letter to the editors of a series of books popular in the late 70s called "The People's Almanac", published in the third book.

The letter was from a woman who had been tormented for years by the same dream. In this dream, she is alone in some sort of restroom and a crouched figure, whom she cannot discern as male or female, walks into the room and goes into a stall. Then the woman hears a sick, squishing sound like bandages being torn away, and a voice saying something like "Help me." In the dream, she opens the stall and always, ALWAYS she would then wake up screaming, horrified, yet unable to discern or remember just what it was that was so awful.

After years of having this same terrifying dream, the woman who wrote the letter actually found herself alone in an airport restroom. A crouched figure walked into the restroom and entered a stall. The woman was paralyzed with shock and fear to hear the same squishing, tearing sounds. The sounds then stopped, and there was a long pause of silence as if the entity in the stall was waiting for something. The woman shouted at the stall, "I know what you want me to do, and I'M NOT GOING TO DO IT!!"

This was followed by the strange squishing, tearing sounds again, and the creature burst from the stall and left the restroom, never to be
seen by the woman, in dreams or reality, again.

somehow, it reminds me of 'interview with the vampire' the book, anyway... its got that same type of air to it... dont know how to explain it. you dont exactly know what to think of it... but you can sense something wrong with it. and thiers the whole rules thing with it... cant get in or do anything until the guy gave consent... the whole language thing.

that one is gonna have me checking strangers' eyes.

21. It's a brilliantly constructed ghost story. Nothing truly untoward happens
but the undercurrent is of all-consuming evil.
