19. You know what? "Ticking" is great! |
|
Not my favorite Elton song, but ONE of them, but I'm so glad someone else likes it the way I do. The lyrics are a bit strained and dated ("He knifed a Negro waiter..." etc.) and ultimately, I guess, Taupin is trying to "paint a picture" with words but doesn't really carry it off. Still, there's an enormous amount of passion and atmosphere generetad in this song. I have often listend to it with my head between the speakers, focussing specifically on Elton's piano. I guess I'd rather the song be JUST Elton and the piano. It's a bit overproduced (by Gus Dudgeon, I guess?). Having said that, the long drawn-out synth drone at the end is fucking brilliant, and I always crank up te volume as it dies away. Same way I deal with the end of the Beatles' "A Day In the Life."
My favorite Elton songs are probably: Levon, Sixty Years On, Funeral/Love Lies Bleeding, Rocket Man, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters....I frankly stopped listening seriously to Elton after Blue Moves. I don't know his recent stuff. But if there's a "least favorite" Elton song for me, I'm sure it's been written, produced and performed in the last 20 years.

23. Yah... Crock sucks pretty hard... |
|
though my daughter loves it.
She's only 7, and likes it primarily becuase she has a thing for the Crocodile Hunter (Steve Erwin). Hell, she even likes the Baha Men remake of Crock Rock with the lyrics altered to be ABOUT Steve Erwin. Hey, it could be worse... she could be into RAP!

Just because no one else will mention it. Or Rotten Peaches, Madman, Holiday Inn. (Gee, can ya tell what my favorite Elton album is?)
Worst? Pretty much everything for the last 20 years. I wish he'd live up to his repeated promises to retire. The pap and dreck he specializes in these days warrants nothing less than projectile vomiting. That's putting it nicely. Soda commercials is all he's good for anymore.
Oh, wait - there were a couple other contenders for best song on Yellow Brick Road: how could I forget the Ballad of Danny Bailey?
Some punk with a shotgun killed young Danny Bailey In cold blood, in the lobby of a downtown motel...
And there's not many knew him the way that we did Sure enough he was a wild one, but then aren't most hungry kids
Now it's all over Danny Bailey And the harvest is in Dillinger's dead I guess the cops won again
And Sweet Painted Lady. Elton was at his best doing a hamfisted englishman's eccentric americana and oddities. Now he sounds like a corporation. It's sad.
