What sports teams do you consider your teams' greatest rivals?
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 04:31 PM by mvd
The sports teams mentioned can be college or pro.

College - now that Penn State's in the Big 10, it's hard to choose.
NHL - still the Devils (Flyers fan here.)
MLB - the Marlins (They are so frustrating! Phillies fan here.)
NFL - the Giants (some would say Cowboys, but the Redskins & Cowboys seem to have a rivalry all to their own. Eagles fan here.)
NBA - the Lakers (they're in the West, but I want revenge for that series someday. :-) Sixers fan here.)

2. Okay, I'll do both
Michigan football - Ohio State
Red Wings - Nordilanche
Pistons - Celtics

The Lions and Tigers have varying rivals. Overall, I would say the Lions' biggest rivals are Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Tigers' are probably Cleveland, the White Sox, and Toronto.

12. Mine
I have two main college teams, one for geography, the other for religion.

University of Arkansas (I grew up in Arkansas) main rivals are LSU for in conference and University of Texas out of conference.

Brigham Young University, main rival is the University of Utah. That one is a great rivalry. Two schools, only 45 miles apart. One religious, the other public. One a football school, one a basketball.

Thankfully they never play each other so I don't have to pick between the two.

14. As a 'Canes fan, it has to be the flopping Gators
As a kid I attended the '71 Miami vs. Florida game in which the Florida defense intentionally dropped to the ground in pushup position with about a minute left, trying to get the ball back for John Reaves to break the NCAA passing record.

Our seats were right there, very low, and I will never forget the young whiteclad Florida assistant who ran down the sideline BEFORE THE PLAY, motioning his hands toward the ground with palms down, signaling the defense what to do. The Gator coaches have always insisted they had nothing to do with the call and were as surprised as everyone else in the Orange Bowl. What absolute bullshit!! But so typical of Gainesville. After that game, I no longer had to ask my dad why it was a family ritual to despise the Gators.

Florida was Miami's ultimate rival until bailing out of the annual football game after '87, prefering to play the likes of Florida A & M or San Jose State. The Miami/FSU rivalry is comparitively civil and insignificant.

We'll make the Gators weep again in 2007.

I damn well hate the Wolverines.
And oh -- I'm a Wings fan. Remember when Bob Probert used to grind the bones of EVERY Blackhawk and snort them? Yeah, screw you, Chicago.

26. The Detroit Red Wings are pure evil
For several reasons:

1)I used to be a Blackhawks fan.

2)I am now a Blues fan.

3)Chelios is a dirty traitor.

4)Hull is an even dirtier traitor.

32. From Philly here.....
NFL - Dallas Cowgirls!! I hate the Giants and Redskins too but nowhere near as much as those punk asses from Dallas.

NHL - I'm an Islanders fan which might seem weird considering I grew up in the shadow of the Spectrum but there are deep personal reasons that have to do with Ed Snider why I am an Islander fan. I used to go in their locker room and shit on Long Island when I was a kid and I have many game used sticks from Bossy, Smith, Gilles, Tonelli and others. I sat next to Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee from Rush in the 1981 Final against Minnesota when I was 11 years old. They are my team and the Rangers are my natural rival but I hate the Flyers just as much because I have to live with their fans. Nystrom was NOT offside, the offside goal was the second of the game Goddamnit!

MLB - Right now in baseball I'd have to say the Marlins are our mortal enemy. We just can't beat them. I also hate Atlanta, the Cardinals and the Red Sox. In the American League I like the Yanks and the A's.

NBA - Don't care. I don't like basketball. I like A.I. as a person though.

College - I like Penn State and Florida State. Hate Miami and Ohio State and especially hate Notre Dame.
