Deaf in certain tones - high frequency. I can't hear fire engines, police sirens, phone ring etc. Speech is hard to understand. People sound like they are mumbling. And forget little kids, I can't understand them at all! Men who have deep voices are easier to understand.
I use a combination of what I do hear and lip reading. Thank goodness for Closed Captioned TV. Prior to having that I didn't bother to watch tv at all. Hmmm, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. ;)

indeed I work in advocacy at a Center for Independent Living.
HawkeyeX, who is Deaf, was very active here, especially during the primaries. He is/was a Dean supporter, so maybe that's why he hasn't been around much lately. :-)
