Streaking Celebrated In Australia - How Will YOU Celebrate The 30th Year??
<snip>

THIS weekend the world will be celebrating the little-known 30th anniversary of one of Australia's most eye-catching inventions - streaking.

It was at Twickenham on a chilly April afternoon in 1974 that former accountant and proud Australian Michael O'Brien nudely interrupted a match between France and England, sparking the naked ambitions of disrobers across the world.

The liberating burst was eventually halted by giggling policemen, who, after tackling him to the turf, provided photographers with a priceless comedy gem - the "Bobby's helmet over groin" routine.

"It was a cold day," laughed one policeman at the time, the BBC reported. "I can tell you he had nothing to be proud of."

"Streaking", to many might not be up there with the Hills Hoist or "permapress pants" when it comes to great Aussie inventions, but streakers (whose lifestyles ironically demand the need for neither) and their fans would disagree.
