FOR five months, Dylan Thomas Larvin proudly showed off his new BMW to family and his close friend – the car's actual owner.

He was supremely confident that his efforts to disguise the $43,500 vehicle with silver paint and false licence plates would ensure his theft would go undetected.

But in the District Court yesterday, four months after he was discovered, the 22-year-old thief, who pleaded guilty, held his head in his hands as he was jailed for four years and two months.

Chief Judge Terry Worthington said Larvin, of Allenby Gardens, flaunted the car in front of its owner in a way that was "breathtaking in its audacity". In August last year, Larvin took the keys of a steel blue BMW which belonged to his then girlfriend's cousin, going to the woman's house later to steal the car.
