CONFESS!!!!!!!! What talent or skill do you wish you had?
Me, I wish I knew how to surf.

I love surfing movies, the ocean and I dream of one day owning a Surfing/Coffee shop in one of the best surf areas in Costa Rica.

But I can't surf worth a damn. Hey, I grew up in Central PA - what was I going to do, surf down the Susquehanna :eyes:

But I would love to learn how. I was hoping to learn when I went to Costa Rica, but there were too many people in our group that had too much planned out and I had no time at the beach.

So what skill or talent do you wish you had???!!!!

1. I'd like to be proficient at a musical instrument.
Oh, and NSMA might be able to teach you how to surf, but you might have to get acquainted with the hood of her car in exchange. ;-)

9. Hey Lynne, there's no time like the present.
You ought to go down the shore this summer and rent a board. It's not hard to learn if:
1. You start on a big board like 9'6"
2. you don't mind falling and looking foolish for a bit.
I'm sure that the others surfers will help if asked and I know there will be a few old fogies out there. Not that your an old fogie.

13. Wish I could sew...
I'm so creative in other ways. I can cook a meal you'd die for, I kick butt at decorating, gardening, drawing, painting, creative writing....

but I have no patience for sewing. I could probably sew on a button, but it wouldn't stay on for long. And there's all that stuff about tension and bobbins and crap with machines.

I'd love to be able to make gorgeously elaborate window coverings or beautiful bed pillows, coverlets, etc.

But I'm hopeless.

15. I would LOVE to learn to play the piano
My mom once told me when I was 5 years old a piano teacher friend told them I should have lessons because I had "such beautiful long fingers." Unfortunately, they couldn't afford it then. I did learn to play the cello in 5th grade and played it until my junior year in high school, but I've always yearned to learn the piano.

I'd also like to wake up one morning magically capable of speaking Urdu fluently so I could converse with and fully understand my husband's family and friends (instead of hanging on the few words I do understand and then estimating the entire context of the conversation), but that won't happen, and I certainly don't have time right now to devote myself solely to the study of Urdu.

18. I wish I could be fluent in various languages other then English
And sometimes (like now-tired) I am not even fluent in that!

French is still a suprisingly widely spoken language here in Maine and I visit Quebec at least once a year. I'd like to actually be able to converse w/the people whose Province I visit!

Spanish would be nice too since as a telemarketer, I deal with many Spanish speaking folks in the Southern and Western States.

Hebrew and Arabic would have been nice to know as well during my 15 day visit to Israel & the West Bank.

Heck, I wish I knew at least something of any of the major world languages. I think it's very arrogant on the part of our education system here in the US that teaching our children a second languauge is so little valued. In most any other democratic society a MUCH higher percentage of the people are bilingual. In Israel for example, even the McDonald's girl knew our language, but I didn't know her's. That is because English is a requirment for Israeli children very early on when they can best retain it. Why do we expect the rest of the world to know English but we don't have to learn a second language?

We should teach our children at least one other language (perhaps french or spanish depending on what part of the US they are in) from a much younger age. HS is too late.

OK. I'm done butchering English on DU for the day... I have too much to get get done. :-)

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend to you and the gang this weekend Lynne.

20. Check out some adult evening classes in your area.
French and Spanish are remarkably easy to learn. And once you know one, you'll be able to adopt to another very quickly, as well as Italian, Portugese, etc.

The thing that helped me the most in high school was learning verb conjugation. Once you know those, the nouns etc are just building blocks to making longer sentences. Once you know "I am, you are, he has," etc, you are good to go!

I would highly recommend it! Barring that, just pick up some of the language CDs or cassettes to listen to in your car.

I was using the "Teach Yourself" book and cassette series a couple years ago to teach myself Turkish. They are a good teaching tool!

26. Lately, I've wished I knew how to weld.
Maybe sounds weird. Maybe comes from watching lots of Junkyard Wars and Monster House/Garage shows. American Chopper, too. I'd love to be able to weld two pieces of metal together in such a way that it's hard to tell they were never anything but a single piece.

Not the David Copperfield type of stage productions or tricks that require elaborate huge props and assistants. The sort of disappearing tricks where you're a foot away from the person they amaze you at how the fuck did they do that?
