OK, I'm out of the curly hair closet. |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 10:42 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
For years I've had trouble with my hair. I always thought it was straight, but with some weird kink in it, so I spent a lot of time combing it straight (I sound like such a girl). However, a few weeks back, I just stopped combing it. Just like that, Cold Turkey. Since then, my hair has gotten curlier and curlier, so that it now (on a good day) looks like Jim from the Jesus and Mary Chain (not him, just his hair, otherwise I definitely would be weird) and on a bad day, it's really starting to Kramer.
This was, somehow after 27 years, an actual shock to me. What does that say about my self-awareness?

3. But that's just it, I had long straight Iggy Pop hair. |
|
I guess the curl needed to be nurtured. It needed some lurrve.

Well, that is intersting! I wonder if my hair would curl if I stopped combing it. I'll never find out because I'm not cutting it, and not combing long hair will just end up with a huge tangle, not curls.
Dang! I want curls!

You do realize that I may have to take you over my knee for having naturally curly hair all this time and not doing anything with it. ;)
You wouldn't believe how long it takes to put the perm in my naturally straight-as-a-board hair. *big sigh* :)

you two are like the cultural maelstrom - you ought to take your show on the road! Like Lollapalooza, rock and roll DUpalooza. I would pay (well maybe) to see it. Oh wait, I don't have to, I can see it for free! You guys were on some r and r rant a few days ago that had me splitting my sides. Morrissey rant I think. Hysterical!

or doing work. Whatever that may be. I don't get how y'all can post so much, I never had any time when I was in an office all the time. I was a manager and did clinical work, so I had zilch time. That is why I do consulting now. :) Since I work at home a lot and have several locations where I do work, it is fun to have a virtual "water cooler."

8. I could think of worse hair than Jim's |
|
I, however, was born with what hairstylists have told me is "Asian" hair, meaning straight with absolutely no curl or wave to it. I still don't know quite how I feel about it. It certainly can be boring at times. I wouldn't mind some definition.

If it was truly curly you'd have known from the start. Wavy hair is like curly hair without the strength of its convictions. Length adds weight, and weight flattens the wave. This was patiently explained to me by one stylist after another who wanted to cut my length and release my inner curl. But they had not lived with my weird kink, or grown up in a world that offered only hairspray and Dippity-Doo to control that annoying flippy thing it did, when all I wanted was long straight hair like the cool girls.
But now messy hair is stylin' so the waviness makes it easy to look au courant. Welcome to Wavy World. :hi:

All the 'cool' straight-haired skinny girls used to make fun of big-boned frizzy-haired me. I figure I've got the last laugh though, cause all those girls are now forking it over for perms and bigger boobs. What goes around comes around.

29. Self-awareness is overrated. |
|
Awareness of others moreso.
It is in only in the awareness of the nonphenomenal, the extra-empirical, and the subgeneric that we become as gods.

|
One day for various reasons I decided to see what I was supposed to look like. I have these genes that keep telling my body how to grow and I had been attempting to force my will on my hair. So I stopped cutting it. Never going back.

38. SAME thing happened to me--honestly |
|
For YEARS I thought my hair was straight, with just a slight..slight wave to it.
Always brushed it when I got out the shower, and for YEARS--we're talking from birth through age 21--I thought I had the most horrible, un-manageable hair on the planet.
Well, one day (I was 21, actually), I got out the shower and was in a rush and didn't blow dry or brush my hair.
When it dried, I was AMAZED to see how fugging curly it was. We're talking 'looks like a perm" curly.
So ever since then, in addition to finding out my hair had curl to begin with, it's gotten CURLIER!
It's still unruly and has a mind of its own, but it sure does make styling it a bit easier, and now I realize why bangs were never possible with my mop-head. And why short, page-boy hairstyles never worked. Or why anything that wasn't one length, and past the shoulders never worked.
it took me 21 years, but I finally figured it out.
Congratulations on finding your hair's true 'essence' :)

I spent hours trying to straighten my hair. One day a stylist asked if I wanted it curly. She just scrunced it and let it dry and I had curls. It's sort of in between curly and staight, but I never knew I had those curls.
