I got a good job this week. After looking for 1 1/2 years, spending |
|
$5,000 of my own money and 1/1/2 years back in school, I was offered a job at $60,000+. My wife's job was bushwacked in January 2004 so it was a bit tough and I am very glad it is almost over. I said I would donate $250 to Kerry when I got a job and the same again when my wife found employment. Well, I got such a good job, I am going to make it $500 for me right now. I am so glad this is over, it is really hard finding a decent job when you are over 55.

Plenty of interviews for good-paying positions in that time, but nada.
I usually get the old "you're over-qualified = oh, we didn't realize you were over 35...never mind" routine. That also translates into the "you're over-qualified = oh, we had no intention of paying you a salary commiserate with your experience, or even half of your experience, for that matter" routine.
I've been flown in for interviews, etc. And, I've been told - and I always feel - that I interview quite well. I haven't had an interview in the past three years that didn't run at least an hour to an hour-and-a-half (I feel that's way too long for an interview, BTW. I've been on plenty of them where the company is just poking for freebie info that they can use without hiring anyone, so I try to keep as much info as close to my vest as possible. But when you're interviewing for more-senior management positions, they usually put you through the wringer. C'est la vie!).
But, next week is another week, and hope springs eternal (I have the feeling I'll be saying this until January, 2005!).
Again, congrats!

8. Yeah, it is tough out there but you have to hang in there. I actually |

applied and interviewed for this position last July. At that time it was a temp to permanent position at $18.00 an hour. The legal placement agency said they had the requisition for sometime but I was the first they requested to interview. It sounded like they were going to offer me a permanent position but then they couldn't get the position funded. Somehow, I felt I would have another chance. Then, bingo they contacted the agency looking to see if I was available.
Have you though about more training in your field? That is what I did. I had attended first year law school in 1976 but had to leave after a serious car accident. Did all kinds of things to get our lives back under control after surgery and rehab from the accident. Then I got an unexpected opportunity to do contracts. Then I was made permanent and a great attorney took me under her wings and taught me. After I left that place after almost 20 years. I eventually came to the conclusion that contracts are what I do and maybe I should get some formal training. I did the paralegal coursr at the University of Washington. Then I did the Contract Management certificate course at the UW. Rest is history.
