Liberal Christians: What is your favorite Bible verse?
Mine is:

Matthew 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully
use you, and persecute you.

1. One of mine is:
Mark 10:24

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

I wish it were harder for someone who is rich to get on a ballot.

2. Matthew 25:37-40
37
Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
38
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
39
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'
40
And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'

by Matt 6:5-6 (see posts 5 & 6 below)

There are so many from which to choose- regardless of one's religious views, it's hard to argue that He wasn't a great teacher~ too bad so many of his self-appointed representatives are such assholes...

5. not a christian
but my favorite verse is probably Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

I also like most of Ecclesiastes 3, and all of Jonah, only because I think of it as a great satire of doomsday prophets :p

6. Matthew 6:5-6
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 07:56 PM by REP
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 7:15-20 is good, too.

Ok, I'm not a Christian, but it sounded so good in Pulp Fiction...

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who leads the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers, and you will know my name is the lord, when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

21. That is not an accurate quotation
Here is the passage from Ezekiel 25

15 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, 16 therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Kerethites and destroy those remaining along the coast. 17 I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD , when I take vengeance on them.' "

11. Two contradictory verses that I like:
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Psalms 127:2

A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a vagabond,
and want like an armed man.

Proverbs 6:10-11

13. Some of my favorites
Jeremiah 14:14
Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries, and the delusions of their own minds."

Luke 12:15
Then he said to them, (the crowd) "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

Matthew 23:15
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are." (Sound like Bu$h* proselytizing?)

Matthew 5: 9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

15. For inspiration: Matt 5:9; but my all time favorite is Matt 21:21
Matthew 21:21
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

Today, our mountain is * and the corporate crime syndicate. When I get really discouraged and cynical, I just picture that big old mountain throwing itself into the sea.

17. Matthew 23:14
23:14 "And woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you devour widows' houses, and that under the disguise of a long prayer; therefore you will be the more severely punished."

also Mark 12:40

12:40. "Who devour widows' houses, and that under the disguise of a longprayer. These shall receive a severer condemnation."

Luke 20:47

20:47. "Who devour widows' houses, and by way of pretence make long prayers 3. These shall receive greater condemnation"

Thrice warned about "religion for profit" at the expense of those in society least able to support such an endeavor.

Simple and to the point. So very appropriate for what's happening now.
