1. You're not alone
I hated HS too, didn't go to prom because I thought there were more important things to do with your time. That and I couldn't get a date. :(

The good news is, highschool ends. There's this whole other life after it, so it really ultimately does not matter.

2. I never cared about prom night.
I got asked by lots of guys and turned them all down.
I thought it was silly. A lot of fuss over nothing.
Maybe the fact that I'm gay has something to do with it!
Why do you hate school so much?

6. the reasons for hating school so much...
i find it all so pretentious.

everyone thinks its the end all and be all of your life, they say its the best time of your life, god i hope not.

i dont like they way im treated there jsut because i refuse to care about all these hoops people put infront of me to jump through, im there to get an education, if i make a friend or two while im there fine, but thats not the main purpose. and for that people treat me like shit.

7. I'm nearly 38 years old
Had lots of friends and was successful in HS.
My 20th reunion is coming up this summer and I won't be attending. I was happier when the superficial games and posturing ended and became an adult.
For me, the best time of my life is NOW.

14. 18-24 is more interesting, it seems.
A lot more freedom then. But you should just be picking up on all this opportunity to enjoy things now - I remember that feeling from when I was leaving high school. Especially since Bush* might get elected and the rest of your life could involve sucky circumstances. :D Just fucken with ya'!

15. It was true to some degree.
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 12:52 AM by coloradodem2004
But right now at 24 it is not exactly true. I may see what I can do about making the 25-31 years more like that. I hope. The 18-24 years have been almost as overrated for me as the prom. I could say that about just about any period of life.

4. Went to prom, one of the best HS dances i went too
but of course that wasn't hard.

Prom is over-rated and way too expensive. You probably didn't miss much especially if you didn't want to go.

8. Proms are overrated
I have a typical story; my mother forced me to go, and I am positive it was because she didn't go to hers (long story...). My boyfriend lost his wallet around the limo and the driver didn't help us look, didn't even move the vehicle. He also refused to drive us to the beach with all our other friends, and being kids, we didn't know how to stand up for ourselves. The food at the catering hall was sub par (My father is a chef, and I've worked with him - they totally went cheap on the food because we were a bunch of high schoolers) and there were midge flies all over the grounds, so we couldn't even walk around outside. The only good thing about it was my sister took my dress, dyed it, and used it as a bridesmaid dress a few years later.

There are ten thousand other chances for you to make valued memories of this time of your life. Do not waste time on rituals you see as meaningless.

9. When I was in High School....
...I didn't go to prom either. As a junior, I did not go and my grandma asked me why and then she kept badgering me into going. I kept saying no. Too expensive, didn't know anyone who wanted to date me. She even said that if I could not find anyone to go with, that I should go alone. Really good. I could spend a lot of money feeling resentful about seeing other people dancing with each other while I sit and watch. That, I thought was as stupid suggestion.

On another note, I never really had a problem with high school. I just did my thing with my friends. I would hope HS is not the best time of your life, but it shouldn't be hell. Yes, there is pretentiousness and it irritates me but I see this kind of shit almost everywhere I go. I didn't hate high school, but I LOATHED Middle School.

....they are getting ready to go to after prom right now. They are only sophomores and can't go so it's exciting to them. The sweetheart's dance is no big deal to them now. lol

11. I hated my prom. I didn't want to go, but I gave in to peer pressure
and went.

I was miserable. Pretty much for the reasons you offered.

I ended up hanging out with my super cool Lit. teacher, smoking cigs, talking about Faulkner. My date ended up passed out drunk in the cheap ass motel room we all rented to pary in afterwards.

Prom sucked.

12. Prom is pretty anti-climactic...
...especially if you just ask some girl to go that you haven't been dating otherwise. I didn't really have much fun with my date so much as hanging out with my friends there, but that didn't really last long anyways. I didn't really see what the big deal is. There's always that thing that a bunch of girls pick that as when they're gonna lose their virginity, but I don't think that really happens so much if you just ask the girl to prom just to have a date. No I didn't get laid if you're still wondering.

13. It was overrated IMHO
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 12:22 AM by holyrollerdem
I will be 40 in May. I never went to the prom in my junior year and went in my senior year with a guy who liked me but I didn't really like him but as a friend. I had to wear the same formal I wore at another dance because my mom couldn't afford to buy me anything. Ended up going home sick at the after prom only to find out 3 months later that I had an ovarian tumor that needed removed. I was gaining weight at the end of my senior year and couldn't figure out why until then. i had very low self-esteem because of these things. So my recollections of the prom weren't that great, so you're not missing much.

16. It's built up as a very magical event
but it's really just another dance.

It's really not about conforming to social standards and not everybody hates you. It's just a dance and you just didn't want to go.

17. I skipped my prom
$120 per couple, no singles allowed (I've heard that's changed, which is good), plus another $50 per couple for the "after prom" that my parents would have made me go to, had I gone to prom, plus dress, plus transportation, etc.

No thanks. A bunch of friends and I went to a comedy club instead.

I didn't go to my prom because I thought the whole idea was stupid. I've never regretted it.

Life gets much better after high school. Hang in there.

20. College is so much better...
Just make sure you go to a liberal school. I hated high school too. High school is not end all be all. It's crap. And just so you know: High school prepares you ZERO for college. But you'll adapt. Good luck.
