Poll question: What's your favorite old-sk00l coin-op arcade game?
You know, the ones you can find on the internet these days as quaint little 8k RAM files? :D

14. Berzerk started with the 'intruder alert' line
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 03:18 PM by HypnoToad
Hmmm, I should go add that to the geeky contest post... I remember details from old arcade games.

Berzerk is where you're trapped in a building on an alient world. You need to wipe out the robots before they kill you. It was simple but its use of vocal phrases was novel for 1980...

15. Robotron had two joysticks

one for firing and one for moving.

You had to kill other robots and save the humans. If you played it, you'd remember the brain robots and the hulk robots.

In Defender you had a spaceship over a planets surface and you had to catch something and put it back somewhere (I don't remember too well).

17. I remember it now...
... you had to save the last human family. it took a while to get used to the double joysticks. Early on I kept dying because I would walk into the large group of robots I was firing into. I got better at it in time but always thought there must be a better way to handle the moving and firing that the gamemakers should have come up with.

5. Several
Super Mario Bros., the original coin op.

Tempest. I was never very good at it, but I loved it.

Gauntlet is the ultimate. I've told Haele if we ever come into serious money, I'm finding one of these and refurbing it. My all time favourite game.

And my other would be the original Star Wars. That was a thing of beauty. Line graphics, old skool. All these new fancy games are crap compared to the old ones, though.

The only new game I've seen that I like is something called something like Safari or Animal Safari. You play a gamekeeper driving a jeep. You have to track down a game animal, throw a net to catch it, then reel it in. It's a driving game and fishing game sort of hybrid, very odd, and very addictive.

7. TEMPEST!
I had my own machine for awhile, but it had a crap monitor that only worked about half the time. It was eventually stolen by my ex-roommate.

Joust is my #2.

8. The BEST one I only ever saw once: Stratovox
Kind of a cross between Space Invaders and Defender. Every time you rescued somebody from the aliens, the computer voice would say: "Lucky!" I know it doesn't read back that way, but wildly funny at the time.

I can't remember what games I dropped all that money on in the arcades during the 80s. Maybe on edit after more folks reply

11. HOW could you not include GALAGA on the list?
Galaga is one of the ones that I think it goes without saying would be included on this list. I STILL see Galaga machines all over the place.

13. Missile Command, N.A.R.C. and 720
N.A.R.C. was so cool that the Pixies covered the theme song.

720 was a great skateboarding game

Missile Command was a simulation of living in the US once the rest of the world opens up a barrel of whup-ass on us.

I ROCKED at that game! I could roll over the high score counter at least twice on one quarter. GO ME!

I was also pretty good at Gorf (Bad move Space Cadet), Gyruss, Tempest, Tron, Qix, and AstroBlaster.

The one I sucked ass at but thought was cute...Kangaroo. :)
