Fundie Videos at my Public Library |
|
Should my metro area public library system have 10-20 copies (throughout the branches) of each of these crazy "Cloud Ten" Fundamentalist videos? Titles like "Apocalypse" or "Tribulation" or the "Left Behind" videos? Probably 15 titles, so maybe 150 DVDs and videos total, so like $3000 retail cost. They went begging for a new property tax levy this spring, but they're spending tax dollars on this crap? Or maybe the fundies donate them...
Sadly, many of them seem to be checked out. So, the library could say they are just serving the community interests.
Admitted, I've checked out a couple just to see how dreadful they are... I'm watching "Tribulation" which has Gary Busey, Howie Mandell, and Margot Kidder... also Nick Mancuso (who seems to be a common thread among the productions). Pure propaganda.
Of course, it is good to know that after the rapture, every Christian's clothing will be neatly folded and stacked, with the shoes placed on top. (No kidding.)
They have other stuff, too... like fundie videos for kids.

1. A lot of things in libraries are donated. |
|
I would not be surprised if that were the case here. Either a local fundie or the publisher to get a tax break.
If they get more tax money, make more requests for Chomsky and Palast.

2. Wow! I think I'd be upset to see that in my library too. |
|
It's possible that they donate them; you know how crazy the fundies are about getting their 'message' out. One think I'd like to know is why these actors (ie, actors people have heard of) take jobs on these movies.

3. Public libraries strive to offer a broad viewpoint. |
|
We aren't meant to be research libraries--we serve a broad range. Our library carries those videos because they ARE popular, but we also carry lots of foreign and indy films as well. If something is in high enough demand, adn it meets our criteria, we will order more of it.
Like it or not, the LaHaye books and vids are very popular among taxpayers, so we buy them (yes, BUY). We also carry "The Awful Truth" and have had to reorder it 4 times.
Don't like it? Fill out a Request for Reconsideration form, but don't expect them to be pulled off the shelves. They ARE fiction, after all.
