Most ELECTRIFYING song ever on (your) first listen

Forgive the subject line; I just can't figure how to phrase it, given space limitations. Here's the thought: cast your mind back to the first time you ever heard any of your favorite songs, or once-favorites subsequently played to death on the radio (Think "Free Bird") or turned into tv commercials or whatever.

Strangely, even though it'd be a new and revolutionary definition of "electrifying," I'm kind of leaning towards "Rhiannon." (Yeah, call me crazy, so long as you do it in the form of a reply and thus kick my thread.:)) Embarrassinger (now a word): the song that caused me to buy the album it came from on the fewest hearings? "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Jeez, I'm confessing more here than when I was Catholic!

More conventionally electrifying, I guess, would be "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Layla," "Burning Down the House," Foo Fighters' "Learning To Fly," and "She's Got Issues" by Offspring.

What are yours? I promise not to smirk if it's something worse than Gordon Lightfoot. :D

I would have to agree with you on Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly". It just really hooked me. As for an older song: Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". I remeber hearing that song and was totally blown away by it. Then about 6 months later Puff Daddy did that cover of it.:grr:

I also felt that way upon my first listen to Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion."

and it was because of that song. I couldn't properly describe it to anyone, so I just bought CD after CD. I didn't get Physical Graffiti until the sixth or so try, but by then I was a dyed-in-the-wool Zep fan.

I heard it on the radio one day when I was 13. I was totally hooked and knocked by its witchy weirdness, wild, unearthly vocals and amazing riffs. Had no idea what the song's title was, though, so I simply started buying Zeppelin albums one at a time, one every week or so. (I was 13---had to save up my lawn-mowing money). By about the sixth purchase, I got "Zep III," which contained the song.

By that time, I was a major Zeppein fan, and I still am.

I was a month or so away from my 17th birthday. We were on vacation from school, so I was up late that night, lying in bed with the lights out and the radio on.

Suddenly, I heard a song that I had never heard before. It grabbed my attention as soon as the DJ stopped talking over the intro and the male tenor launched into the first verse. The record crescendoed (if that's even a word!) and climaxed when the singer belted out, "Billie Jean's not my lover. She's just a girl who claims that I am the one, but the kid is not my son."

"Damn," I exclaimed. "What the hell is this song? It's fuckin' great!"

Unfortunately, the announcer didn't give the artist or song title, but it didn't take me long to find out that I had heard Michael Jackson's new single. I subsequently bought the 45, which I've no doubt helped "Billie Jean" spend seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ;)

Twenty-one years later, I still love "Billie Jean." Certainly one of the bright spots of early '80s mass-appeal music!

...I remember it creating it's own little space whether it came out of a shitty little car radio speaker or not. I'd been prepared by certain SF novels and avant-garde art movements and social behaviors. There'd been other great records and way-out-weird guitar playing. The Jeff Beck solo on SHAPES OF THINGS comes to mind. But there was really something about PURPLE HAZE. It was so take-no-prisoners weird..weird from the first note on. It's almost not a song. It's like some encapsulated piece of musical crime...

1980. I was still in High School. I was already out of the mainstream listening to punk bands like X and DK. I was an angry young white guy, but I didn't know why, or with whom I was angry.

I bought the album (Uprising) because I liked the rebellious title. I was so clueless about Marley. Redemption Song was the fist Bob Marley I had really listened to, and it opened my eyes to a different view of the world. I played it over and over the first time I heard it, trying to get all the lyrics.

I listened to that song and thought that there was no crime so great that some human would not commit it, and there is no depth so low that the human spirit could not overcome it.

It made me feel sad, angry, and triumphant at the same time, and still does, nearly 25 years later.

Here's one that still gives me chills: The Second Movement of the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. It's done by a boy's / men's chorus with a boy soloist. The melody is unusual, but beautiful.

I was standing near the stage where the performers came from back stage to the stage.
I was just some goofy 18 year old kid REALLY HIGH...
It was time for the Airplane. They began to come out. I was just awed.
Grace had this huge bouffant hair-do streaked with gray and she was doing the Elsa Lancaster Bride-of-Frankenstein thing.
She pulls up right next to me and looks me in the eye and says very pointedly "Yes?"
I'm all at-sea. I muster up some courage and say, "have you ever taken acid on an airplane?"
She stops and looks at me, as if she's actually thinking about it and then says, "Yes."

The earliest one I remember that just floored me was when I was in 8th grade and heard 'Who Dunnitt?' by Genesis off of the Abacab album. There were some really weird pitch changes and what sounded like reverse tape loops running in the track. It was such an odd and unusual sound that I was blown away. I actually got the album as a gift after ranting about it for a while. Oddly I never really became a big Genesis fan, I just remember that song as being a huge turning point for me :)
