Most ELECTRIFYING song ever on (your) first listen
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 06:09 PM by undisclosedlocation
Forgive the subject line; I just can't figure how to phrase it, given space limitations. Here's the thought: cast your mind back to the first time you ever heard any of your favorite songs, or once-favorites subsequently played to death on the radio (Think "Free Bird") or turned into tv commercials or whatever.

Strangely, even though it'd be a new and revolutionary definition of "electrifying," I'm kind of leaning towards "Rhiannon." (Yeah, call me crazy, so long as you do it in the form of a reply and thus kick my thread.:)) Embarrassinger (now a word): the song that caused me to buy the album it came from on the fewest hearings? "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Jeez, I'm confessing more here than when I was Catholic!

More conventionally electrifying, I guess, would be "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Layla," "Burning Down the House," Foo Fighters' "Learning To Fly," and "She's Got Issues" by Offspring.

What are yours? I promise not to smirk if it's something worse than Gordon Lightfoot. :D

Edit: Couldn't leave off my THeads!

1. I have a couple.
I would have to agree with you on Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly". It just really hooked me. As for an older song: Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". I remeber hearing that song and was totally blown away by it. Then about 6 months later Puff Daddy did that cover of it.:grr:

I also felt that way upon my first listen to Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion."

67. Yep, I first got into Zeppelin in the late 80s
and it was because of that song. I couldn't properly describe it to anyone, so I just bought CD after CD. I didn't get Physical Graffiti until the sixth or so try, but by then I was a dyed-in-the-wool Zep fan.

:headbang:

111. "Immigrant Song"---Led Zeppelin...
I heard it on the radio one day when I was 13. I was totally hooked and knocked by its witchy weirdness, wild, unearthly vocals and amazing riffs. Had no idea what the song's title was, though, so I simply started buying Zeppelin albums one at a time, one every week or so. (I was 13---had to save up my lawn-mowing money). By about the sixth purchase, I got "Zep III," which contained the song.

By that time, I was a major Zeppein fan, and I still am.

Good thread!

2. Dark Star
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 06:17 PM by teach1st
Grateful Dead *

Also, "A Very Cellular Song," by Incredible String Band.

Pop? Well, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" certainly got my attention, as did some of Eminem's stuff.

I guess this dates me, huh?

10. Not really.
Actually, didn't Crosby Stills and Nash do a song called Dark Star? I remember that one was good. Everybody I know likes "Bohemian Rhapsody". But if you go from Queen to Eminem, it would be hard to date you.

15. That's why I'm always alone on the weekends!
CSN did do a different Dark Star.

Forgive me if my fantasies might seem a little shopworn
I'm sure you've heard it all before. I wonder what's the right form
Love songs written for you, it's been going down for years
But to sing what's in my heart seems more honest than the tears.
I am curious, don't want to hurry us.
I'm intrigued with us.
Ain't this song a bust.
I don't care, dark star.
I met you several years ago,

etc.

"Dark Star" is a pretty good song - albeit not nearly up to CSN's and Grateful Dead's par - on one of their earlier albums, The Bends

I wanted to go but had to do the boy's birthday.. Robinhood (play) and a bunch of out of control 8-9 year old boys. Whew.

I used to go to all the choice marches in the days of Bush one and before. I have to go and dig out all my pro-choice buttons. ( I used to be a clinic/pro- choice escort, as well.) I think we all got kind of complacent when Clinton was in.

64. So many Dead songs...
were, in turn, the most electrifying for me on first listen...

Stella Blue
Weather Report Suite
Estimated Prophet
Box of Rain
Eyes of the World
Unbroken Chain

ah, heck, nearly all of them are great though I never did learn to like Day Job.

A couple others that really grabbed me on first hearing -

Jump into the Fire - Nilsson
Baker Street - was that Jerry Rafferty from Steeler's Wheel?

3. If by electrifying...
... you mean made me take up and notice then it would have to be Paradise by the Dashboard Light. I heard it when I was 16 and thought the Phil Rizzuto bit was cool. Then when I heard it in college one day I thought "so THATS what it means". OK so I was slow. Now that I am a father I tell my boys, alas no girls, to listen to the end of it. Anyway it has something for each stage of life.

40. I still turn that song up real loud on my radio when driving
And then end is the best end of any song ever.

So now I'm praying for the end of time
to hurry up and arrive.
Cause if I've got to spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive.
I'd never break my promise or forget my vow.
but God only knows what I could do right now.
I'm praying for the end of time,
that's all that I can do,
praying for the end of time,
so I can end my time with you.

either "Have You Seen the Saucers? or "The House at Pooneil Corners." Of course, I have no memory of listening to those songs for the first time.

I DO remember being electrified upon hearing "Pinball Wizard" by The Who and "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.

20. "A Day in the Life"
I was in college and listening to the radio in the dorm room, and I thought to myself, "Boy, they're sure playing one weird song after another today." I had no idea that it was all the same weird song. But it just got stranger and stranger, and that orchestral bit at the end where the pitch seems to go up and up and up (but doesn't really) seemed to go on forever.

Blew my mind totally.

I would normally agree with notmyprez on Light My Fire but It was Crystal Ships that was playing as I realized for the very first time that things sounded different. My friends next to me sounded like they were in the next room but the music on the brand new album sounded like it was coming from inside me.

Yes, Crystal Ships is my choice.

:silly: :hippie:

Before you slip into unconsciousness
I'd like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss
Another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We'll meet again
We'll meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry
I'd rather fly

The crystal ships is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back
I'll drop a line

35. Here's another
I was a month or so away from my 17th birthday. We were on vacation from school, so I was up late that night, lying in bed with the lights out and the radio on.

Suddenly, I heard a song that I had never heard before. It grabbed my attention as soon as the DJ stopped talking over the intro and the male tenor launched into the first verse. The record crescendoed (if that's even a word!) and climaxed when the singer belted out, "Billie Jean's not my lover. She's just a girl who claims that I am the one, but the kid is not my son."

"Damn," I exclaimed. "What the hell is this song? It's fuckin' great!"

Unfortunately, the announcer didn't give the artist or song title, but it didn't take me long to find out that I had heard Michael Jackson's new single. I subsequently bought the 45, which I've no doubt helped "Billie Jean" spend seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ;)

Twenty-one years later, I still love "Billie Jean." Certainly one of the bright spots of early '80s mass-appeal music!

unless you saw him in concerts and had access to tapes and boots (i still have mine!), from '75 -mid '78 there was little new out there from him, sure "(i'm on) fire," "because the night," and "blinded by the light" got covered and air time, but for 3 years he was unable to release any music.

and he came back with a bang.

"Darkness" is his best work.

I remember hearing it in a parked car on a standard issue car AM radio sometime in the late spring/early summer of '67. I was ready to hear it. It wasn't like anything else. It was like itself...

70. I know what you mean...
...I remember it creating it's own little space whether it came out of a shitty little car radio speaker or not. I'd been prepared by certain SF novels and avant-garde art movements and social behaviors. There'd been other great records and way-out-weird guitar playing. The Jeff Beck solo on SHAPES OF THINGS comes to mind. But there was really something about PURPLE HAZE. It was so take-no-prisoners weird..weird from the first note on. It's almost not a song. It's like some encapsulated piece of musical crime...
Sorry...I get carried away...
I'm not really a Hendrix cultist either. A lot of what he did is aimless doodling. I like the MACHINE GUN from the Isle of Wight concert. Anyway...whatever...PURPLE HAZE is a great record that stood out in an era of great records...

Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 10:33 PM by FrankBooth
First day of 8th grade at a new school. My neighbor's High School brother gave us a ride to middle school in his Camaro. He was playing Van Halen's first album, and the guitar on "Eruption" was a revelation to me. I just couldn't believe it - I'd never heard anything like that before.

Admittedly, I'm not a huge VH fan anymore, but after that fateful ride my musical taste completely changed.

65. Redemption Song -Bob Marley
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 12:05 AM by demwing
1980. I was still in High School. I was already out of the mainstream listening to punk bands like X and DK. I was an angry young white guy, but I didn't know why, or with whom I was angry.

I bought the album (Uprising) because I liked the rebellious title. I was so clueless about Marley. Redemption Song was the fist Bob Marley I had really listened to, and it opened my eyes to a different view of the world. I played it over and over the first time I heard it, trying to get all the lyrics.

I listened to that song and thought that there was no crime so great that some human would not commit it, and there is no depth so low that the human spirit could not overcome it.

It made me feel sad, angry, and triumphant at the same time, and still does, nearly 25 years later.

I grew up in a fundy family and didn't get to listen to secular music, so I decided I'd download some of the choices here.

Here's one that still gives me chills: The Second Movement of the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. It's done by a boy's / men's chorus with a boy soloist. The melody is unusual, but beautiful.

Probably this post is out of place in this thread, but I think you'll like the piece if you give it a chance.

absolutely fucking incredible baritone sax intro that just GRABS you.

Also, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' version of "Stagger Lee"...dark, raucous, balls-out swagger.

And Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter's Blues". Stand-up bass, well-chosen samples, almost hallucinatory lyrics.

Those are three that come to mind immediately, although there's been so much music that's been electrifying on first listen I'd have a job listing everything...

96. Can I tell my Grace Slick story?...
...thanks.
It was a very chemical night in the summer of '69 and the Airplane were playing at the Family Dog at the beach.
I was standing near the stage where the performers came from back stage to the stage.
I was just some goofy 18 year old kid REALLY HIGH...
It was time for the Airplane. They began to come out. I was just awed.
Grace had this huge bouffant hair-do streaked with gray and she was doing the Elsa Lancaster Bride-of-Frankenstein thing.
She pulls up right next to me and looks me in the eye and says very pointedly "Yes?"
I'm all at-sea. I muster up some courage and say, "have you ever taken acid on an airplane?"
She stops and looks at me, as if she's actually thinking about it and then says, "Yes."

80. Any number of songs could qualify . . .
Lots of Dead songs (many have been listed already).

Many Ani Difranco songs.

The earliest one I remember that just floored me was when I was in 8th grade and heard 'Who Dunnitt?' by Genesis off of the Abacab album. There were some really weird pitch changes and what sounded like reverse tape loops running in the track. It was such an odd and unusual sound that I was blown away. I actually got the album as a gift after ranting about it for a while. Oddly I never really became a big Genesis fan, I just remember that song as being a huge turning point for me :)
