Need some good thoughts for my mom, please...

Mom goes into surgery in about an hour and a half (7:00 am). She's having stomach problems and they told her that if they don't do the surgery it's possible that the affected cells may become cancerous.

She's "OK" about the surgery. Everyone else is more nervous than she is (especially me). So if you've got a few good thoughts to spare I'd appreciate them...

I had really major abdominal surgery about ten years ago - surgeons were terrific - they saved my life. But have a family member with her in the hospital during recovery - and also at home with her, if they push her out of the hospital in a day or two. Hospitals are doing that now, and many patients are really too weak to take care of themselves - especially if they live alone or with someone too elderly or frail to provide much physical/strength-related support. Another thing is pain control. Rest is very important to healing, and you don't rest when you're in pain. The doctors often enter an order for pain relief "as necessary" and there are too few qualified hospital personnel, such as nurses(as opposed to orderlies/nurses aides), actually competent to evaluate such a need.

You know nurses are routinely forced to work double shifts and are stretched very thin from the large number of patients assigned to them. So it's very good to have a family member with the patient to raise a little hell when necessary. When my elderly Mother was hospitalized last summer, she fell IN THE HOSPITAL three times, because they didn't respond to her buzzer, and she tried to climb out of the hospital bed to get to the bathroom. And although by law, the hospital was supposed to enter the falls into her medical records, and tell me about it, they didn't. I learned about it from her roommate! I hired a private care attendant just to make sure she was timely fed, bathed, medicated and toileted! Too bad we have gotten to be like some third world country where family members sleep on the floor next to the hospital bed of the patient.
