Poll question: Who went to the March for Women's Lives in DC? |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 09:36 AM by BurtWorm
I went with family and friends but didn't march with the DU delegation. I looked for you all, but pretty soon realized I might as well be looking for a drop of water in the ocean. We joined the march toward the very front. Where did the DUers march?
Great pics in the photo threads! My favorites are the long shots that capture my experience of the day--lots and lots and lots of people, and lots and lots and lots of color.

1. I went to the march--as part of the pro-life counterdemonstration. |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 09:32 AM by Iridium
We weren't quite as sparse as the news accounts would have people believe. I thought it was an important event, so I took my five daughters and we marched in the counterdemonstration. It seems that angered the pro-choice folks all the more..the fact that I brought my girls ages 5 to 16.
I have to tell you, I was appalled at the names my teenage daughters were being called by these so-called pro-choicers. Names like 'little bitches' and 'little right-wing whores' and "I hope you get raped and pregnant someday, you little right-wing slut". I set specific ground rules for our families that we would stick to our chants, but would never go personal. Sadly lots of folks, otherwise progressives like us didn't feel the same way.
When we go to the pro-life march each January, I never hear anybody from our side say such vulgar things. Maybe it goes on, but I have never heard it

there were some who were rude to the pro-lifers, but by in large it was not so in my experience. I am sorry for your daughters having been called that, it was exceedingly inappropriate. However, the Anti-Choicers are not at all the nice people you seem to believe. Being told that God hates me, I'm going to hell for all eternity, I'm a faggot (as a guy supporting women), I'm evil, I'm a murderer, I'm a sodomist, I'm getting my name on their list, etc etc etc is not exactly playing nice.

4. Please don't suggest that all pro-life people are civil |
|
There are websites with pictures and addresses of doctors that these people believe should be killed.
And don't be fooled into thinking that all pro-lifers believe they are doing this for the "dignity of women" (Randell Terry's lastest quip) as well as to save babies. Many, many people believe that women have only one role - childbearing and the subsequent care of those children. That's probably why you got the reaction you did for bringing 5 young women as pro-life protestors.

but we go as part of a church contingent and I just am never in a location where I hear our side saying horrible things. But I always hear things from the other side, but nothing as nasty the very personal things directed at my teenage daughters and in front of my preschooler and elementary school daughters. But I will say this. I took my daughters there to educate them, and I must say they got an education. This is what we're up against. There's no sugarcoating it.

I'm not so naive to believe that everyone on my side of an opinion is always civil or even always in agreement with me for altrusitc reasons. But I am really, really tired of people acting like anyone who holds an opinion opposite their own must be a horrible person in all ways.

Yes. You've admitted the people you were with do not do this, but that doesn't address the fact that many pro-lifers feel they can do and say anything they want to save, as you put it in a later post "THE human life," which I assume means the fetus's life.

But maybe you joined on the wrong day? Did you join to share and discuss issues with like-minded Democrats? I see one post where you backed Kerry's support of the working people, but other than that, I only see you in the "march" discussions. Are you aware of the "ignore" button that allows you to not view things that distress you, bore you, make you angry, waste your time, etc. It's a handy tool.

You come in here and immediately start casting aspersions on the pro-choice demonstrators that the vast majority of us, and the vast majority of Democrats, support. You have a very inflammatory and conveniently anti-choice story. I think it's pretty obvious why many of us might doubt your sincerity in joining DU.

This is my first day here and mine was the first post made in this thread. I frankly am surprised as the reaction I am getting here and surprised that I have heard from no other pro-life people, as a large number of Democrats are Catholic and as Catholics adhering to the beliefs of their church, are pro-life. So since I was first here, how could I have intended to disrupt. BTW I'm not sure I know what disruption is. Is it a discussion like we are having?

then I think you need to sit down and actually think for a second. Use that brain and I think you might figure out why people here aren't 100 percent sure of your bona fides.
You come in here the day after the biggest pro-choice march in history. You have a story that is highly inflamatory. You spew right-wing talking points about respect for "human life" while advocating against the rights of women to control their bodies. If you're really upset why did you think THIS would be the appropriate forum to vent that anger?

Whatever. If you're going to come onto a Democratic site and be anti-choice then you should expect what your getting...especially after what allegedly happened yesterday. You can't have it both ways. You don't get to come on with an inflammatory story about how mean the pro-choicers were to your kids. Then all of a sudden pretend surprise when the people on a Democratic site don't agree with you on abortion.
I mention "disruption" only because the rules don't allow me to specifically call anyone a Freeper troll.
And you might want to rethink that statement about Catholics being anti-choice. Last time I checked the majority of American Catholics thought the Pope should butt the hell out of their sex lives.

Now to your last point, I said in my previous post that 'Catholics who adhere to the teachings of the church, oppose abortion'. The statement you made has nothing to do with those people. You are talking about people who call themselves Catholic, but don't go along with Catholic teaching. It's like being in the NRA but saying you hate guns.

The true teaching of the Catholic church is that the child is to be saved over the life of the mother because if a woman is to die because of childbirth or pregnancy, that's just part of her role as childbearer.

Not true for most good catholics I know. Do you take birth control? Would you protest against birth control? Just curious.
Also, I can't wait to see your posts in other issue discussions. Then I'll know you didn't just join to give us your right wing views on pro-choice. That, my friend, is how you will show we "doubters" that you are a well-meaning Democrat interested in changing our current administration for the benefit of all children.

point of understand with the anti-choice crowd a lot of the time. As with so many other issues, liberals try to see both sides of the issues and reach an understanding while the oposition has a worldview set in stone and sees the whole attempt to "come to an understanding" as a way to take advantage of us being "nice" to get their way. "Coming to an understanding" with the right wing always means US giving something up. Never them.

it is just that I have been involved in this issue for so long ( as a clinic escort, taking friends to the clinic, marching many, many times, as a member of Naral and Planned Parenthood), etc. and I have seen terrible actions by the Op. Rescue folks, tarring, chaining themselves, and the escalating violence that then moved to killing. That is what was, and is so scary.
But I know that there must be a way to end the violence, and I guess when I saw her attempt to dialogue ( maybe I am naive, here) I thought of many in the pro-choice and anti movements who have been and are attempting to have more diaglogue about this issue and possibly reduce the polarization and, by doing this, the violence. Yes, I have yelled at these people, too. Many of them are beyond reason. But there probably is a way to talk to some of them, too.

at women's health clinics, I can tell you have an unrealistic view about these people. I have never seen such hate and anger from supposedly religious people. 40 years ago these folks probably would have been yelling epithets at African-Americans during forced school desegregation. Same mentality, same hatred, same lack of introspection, same need to subjugate someone different than themselves.

Everything is going swimmingly for pro-lifers right now. One Supreme Court justice change, and your daughters can be perfectly happy bearing children and having no choice in careers or education for the rest of their lives.
You do realize that along with this pretty picture comes the eventual unavailability of conception for them as well?
Good luck with your crusade. I consider it my personal responsibility to educate the daughters of people like you so they'll know both sides and can make up their own minds instead of being brainwashed by religion at such impressionable ages.

my first deleted message. How exciting.
Let me put it this way: If your story is to be believed, it would mean that not only did certain individuals find it OK to yell this stuff at children - something I can see happening - but, more importantly, that no one around them objected. You are not pointing the finger at a few individuals here; you are making a statement about pretty much everyone who was there.
I didn't say I don't believe your story because I didn't personally hear it. I said I don't believe your story because it is highly unlikely that those kind of comments would've been acceptable to the group as a whole. The only way I could believe your story is if I assumed pro-choicers in general tend to have a lower standard for the treatment of children, which is very clearly the point you're trying to subtly make here.
The only other alternative is that people did chastise those who yelled at your daughters and you've left that part out of the story.

The most vile comments were said to my sixteen-year-old daughter, with a few said to my 13-year old who is mature for her age. It wasn't as blatant as saying them to, say, my five-year-old.
Even so, the comments made for extraordinarily ugly to say to ANYONE, regardless of their age.

Again, I don't buy it, and I think my feeling that you're not being completely honest about what happened or even who you are is confirmed by the rest of your posts. Was this the Romanian daughter that was being yelled at? Let me guess, does she share her bedroom with the many pregnant teens you take in and support?
I've been debating abortion online for over 5 years now. I know pro-lifers well. I know their tactics. You're pretty much a textbook case, easy to spot and deconstruct.
What street were you standing on during the march, by the way? Did you feel the crowds were moving too quickly or too slowly? Did you take your daughters to any of the museums before/after? Did you drive in or metro? If you drove, what route did you take? If metro, what line? Was it crowded? What did you think of the weather? What did the sign you were holding up say? What was the most common pro-life sign/poster? Which one's stood out the most to you?
I realize none of these questions will actually reveal whether or not you're telling the truth. Most of them can probably be googled pretty easily. Still, I'd like to hear more details about march from you, because right now I'm doubting whether or not you were even there.

Maybe someone here will remember seeing a family of five girls standing by the side. Also, an indication of what signs you all were holding to jog our memories would be helpful. I'm not proposing this because I don't believe you, but because I know, if you were there, you could put a lot of doubt to rest by being specific

11. Just out of curiousity |
|
I realize that there were kids there...and I mean small children, under the age of 13...from both sides of the fence---
Does your 5 year old daughter have any idea what she was supposedly marching for? I don't mean to be rude; but I didn't know what sex was when I was that age.
Is it just me? Am I old fashioned enough to think that maybe 5 year olds should NOT be at choice rallies...for either side?

like I said, I was just curious.
One more question: How many of those daughters are adopted, and do you, your spouse, or older daughters babysit for free so that women who choose NOT to have abortions are able to find work?
On edit, OK, that's two questions, but anti-choice people really make me curious, and there aren't many that will answer questions.

I wasn't asking about Romanian adoption. I'm merely curious to see what other convenient facts come to light.
If I ask whether you attend anti-war rallies or protest at your State capital to agitate for better health care for children...I bet you'll say yes.

I don't understand the "anti-choice" mindset at all...and I am not trying to be a smart ass. The anti-gay people are just as confusing to me---I just cannot wrap my brain around why on earth someone would want to interfere with another person's decisions.
You do know that the Bible is NOT anti-abortion, right? Your minister has shown you the passages that could very well be interpreted as pro-choice?

To pro-choice people, the main issue involved deals with the mother. The concern is for her ability to lead the life she chooses.
But for pro-life people, while we are sympathetic to the plight of the woman, we are far more concerned with the protection and preservation of the human life she is carrying.
The notion that we are 'trying to control' women are sex or whatever...is ridiculous. The vast majority of us just want to protect the human life.

If anti-choice people cared about the life of the mother then the vast majority of them wouldn't be right-wing nutjobs who oppose other women's rights issues...like equal pay and anti-discrimination laws. These are the same people who want to legislate who you can have sex with. These are the same people who supported cutting funding for birth control for poor women world-wide.
Don't. Even. Go. There.

23. Do you think children should have been at rallies for |
|
civil rights in the 60's? Or at rallies for political candidates? As the adult influences in their lives, we are going to teach them to believe the things we believe in. Yes, they can chose when they get older but you still show them what you believe. It is important to show them you feel strongly and are willing to march to show your support. Civil rights. Abortion. Gay rights.
The ones in the wrong are those like fred phelps who has his children hold up signs of hate.

Civil rights, and anti-war demonstrations are very different than a rally about personal MEDICAL choices.
Like I said, I don't have kids. If I did, I would NOT take one to an abortion anything, until they were old enough to even know where babies come from in the first place.

I certainly didn't see anyone calling children names as you describe. I was accousted by a child in the shopping center after the march and I just walked away, which is what I do when children are involved.
Why would someone be rude to your children? There were so many of us, and so few of you. I don't believe you, I really don't.

98. I marched with the DUers |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 03:49 PM by MaineDem
Our bus left Lewiston, Maine at 7PM on Saturday. We got to RFK Stadium around 8AM. My first stop was DNC Headquarters for breakfast and a small rally. They handed out gold sashes to which we could add stickers with the names of those who had signed up to be "virtual" marchers. SInce I was (I think) the only one there at the DNC rally from Maine I put as many Maine people's stickers on as I could fit. We also got signs that said "Democrats march in April and vote in November".
THen we walked to the Mall and found where our DNC gathering spot was. I asked a volunteer where the DU section was and since it wasn't far away I went and joined them for the rest of the day. It was very cool!
I remember some anti-abortion folks with young girls along Pennsylvania Ave. (I still find it hard to believe I actually marched down the same route - in reverse - that President Kerry will take in January.) The girls were dressed in their Sunday best and looked adorable. One turned away as we walked past and hid her face in (presumably) her mother's skirt. I'm pretty sure it didn't have anything to do with the DU delegation.
There was a woman about my age with a t-shirt that said "Woman by Nature; Mother By Choice" and she was walking with her daughters. I was inspired by the women even older than me who were there. Hell, I was impressed by the young people and the men! The whole event is still overwhelming.
THank you all for taking part. We can make it happen! Yes! We can make it happen!
Edited to add - we got back to Maine at 6AM this morning. After going out to breakfast (all I really wanted was a shower) I made it home about 9.

Couldn't find the DU delegation, didn't know where you guys were. I was still gonna march with my group, but I wanted to at least pop in and say hi. Oh well.
